Donald Hall (actor)
Donald Hall (1867–1948) was a British-American film actor of the silent era.Goble p.109 He was married to the actress Frankie Mann and was brother-in-law to Alice Mann. He appeared in a number of Vitagraph Studios films during the 1910s. He also appeared in films produced by Triangle, Goldwyn, Selznick and Paramount Pictures. Following the introduction of sound he made only a few uncredited appearances. ''Mortmain'' is a five-part 1915 Vitagraph mystery drama film, directed bye Theodore Marston. Reviewer Lynde Denig said it was a mystery drama with a scientific background that "comes pretty close to being a model of motion picture craftsmanship." The film was adapted from a story by Arthur Train. The ''New York Clipper'' called it remindful of the stories of Edgar Allan Poe. It stars Robert Edeson. Marguerite Bertsch wrote the screenplay. The story involves the grafting of one man's hand to replace a man's who had his crushed. The consequences are haunting. The film is presumed lost. It was advertised as a "Medical Mystery". An image used in advertising material features a creepy black and white hand with the word "MORT" but on it. Censors blocked the film from being shown in Philadelphia and Chicago. ''The Great Adventure'', also known as ''Her Great Adventure'' and ''Spring of the Year'', is a 1918 American silent comedy-drama film directed by Alice Guy-Blaché, and starring Bessie Love. The film is preserved at the BFI National Archive. Production The film was made at Solax Studios in Fort Lee, New Jersey. Plot Rags (Love), has found local success and acclaim in her small town as an actress, but dreams of stardom on Broadway. She and her aunt (Finch) go to New York, where she unsuccessfully looks for work in a Broadway chorus. On the advice of Billy Blake (Barnett), she holds up the producer of a Broadway show to get a job. The lead actor in the show, Sheen (Hall), likes Rags, but on a date together, he cannot ride a horse, paddle a canoe, or swim. ''Hesper'' was a bulk-freighter steamship that was used to tow schooner-barges on the Great Lakes. She sank in Lake Superior off Silver Bay, Minnesota, in a late-spring snowstorm in 1905. The remains of the ship are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ''Hesper'' was a wooden-hulled, single-screw, triple-masted, cargo ship built by the Bradley Transportation Company in Cleveland, Ohio. She was used to haul both iron ore and grain, two products important to Minnesota's economy at the time. ''Hesper'' was caught in a late-spring snowstorm on 4 May 1905, with a strong nor'easter with winds of 60 mph (97 km/h) driving her off her intended course and smashing her into a reef that now marks the southwest end of the harbor in Silver Bay, Minnesota.
