Don McLeod (politician)
Donald McLeod (29 October 1892 – 22 August 1963) was an Australian politician. Born in Strathmerton, Victoria, he received a primary education and worked as a farmer before enlisting in the AIF in March 1916. He served as a Gunner in the 36 Australian Heavy Artillery Group until leaving the military in April 1919 to become a soldier settler at Gringegalgona. In 1940, he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Labor member for Wannon. He held the seat until his defeat by Liberal candidate Dan Mackinnon in 1949. He defeated Mackinnon in a rematch two years later. Division Of Wannon
The Division of Wannon is an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Victoria. History The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first Federal election. The division was named after the Wannon River. For the first half-century after Federation, it regularly traded hands between the Australian Labor Party and the conservative parties. However, a 1955 redistribution removed most of the seat's Labor-friendly territory, and it has been a safe Liberal seat for most of its history since then. The seat's most notable member was Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser, to date the last prime minister from a country seat. His successor, David Hawker, was Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives during the last term of the Howard Government. Hawker retired in 2010 and was succeeded by Dan Tehan. Gringegalgona, also known as Gringe, is a locality in Western Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 Census Gringegalgona had a population of 44. Etymology The area is named for the homestead and station, squatted by Simon Cadden in 1843. The name is believed to be indigenous in origin, with locals believing it means "water like urine" or to "micturate on a tussock".Victorian historical magazine 1927 Volume: 11 Issue: 44. (1927). Thomas Scholfield
Thomas Hallett Scholfield, MC (9 May 1894 – 25 June 1964) was an Australian politician. He was a United Australia Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1931 to 1940, representing the electorate of Wannon. Scholfield was born in Talangatuk East, Victoria, where he attended state schools and became a farmer. He enlisted to serve in World War I in January 1915, fought with the 21st Battalion at Gallipoli and in France, and received the Military Medal and Military Cross, returning to Australia in June 1919. He subsequently became a soldier settler in the Balmoral area before acquiring a farm near Hamilton, and was a councillor and president of the Shire of Kowree. He was elected to the House of Representatives at the 1931 federal election, defeating Labor MP John McNeill. He had campaigned on a platform of addressing the needs of primary producers. Soldier settlement was the settlement of land throughout parts of Australia by returning discharged soldiers under soldier settlement schemes administered by state governments after World War I and World War II. The post-World War II settlements were co-ordinated by the Commonwealth Soldier Settlement Commission.
