Dolores, Caibarién
Dolores, officially Ward 5, (''Consejo Popular 5''), is a rural settlement and ward located on the Circuito Norte in Caibarién, Cuba. It is located about 10 kilometers away from the municipal seat of Caibarién. History The Dolores sugar mill (Ingenio Dolores) was constructed in 1872, with it having slaves for agricultural and industrial purposes. The mill currently has legends and traditions based around it, which reference the violence of what the slaves had to deal with. Geography The settlement in located in on the junction of the Circuito Norte and the unpaved Remedios–Dolores Road (officially the 4–511). Villa Clara is one of the provinces of Cuba. Caibarién
Caibarién is a municipality city in the Villa Clara Province, Villa Clara province of Cuba. Caibarién is known as "La Villa Blanca" () for its sands and beaches. They are famous for their "Parrandas" (Carnivals) along with Remedios, Cuba, Remedios (the neighboring town located west) and Camajuani. History At the end of 1513, Pánfilo de Narváez las Casas and Grijalba explored the territory. Indigenous settlements were found in the region now occupied by the municipality and in Cayo Conuco. In 1819, the port of Tesisco was closed and Caibarién was ordered to be opened. From 1822 onwards, neighbors from Remedios began to arrive and there was already a population center in the part of Parrado. Narciso de Justa gave land from his hacienda for the foundation of the town. On October 26, 1832, the town was founded based on a plan conceived by Estratón Bauza. Slavery In Cuba
Slavery in Cuba was a portion of the larger Atlantic slave trade that primarily supported Spanish plantation owners engaged in the sugarcane trade. It was practiced on the island of Cuba from the 16th century until it was abolished by Spanish royal decree on October 7, 1886. The first organized system of slavery in Cuba was introduced by the Spanish Empire, which attacked and enslaved the island's indigenous Taíno and Guanahatabey peoples on a grand scale. Cuba's original population was decimated after the arrival of the Spaniards, due to both a lack of immunity to Old World diseases such as smallpox, but also because of the conditions associated with the forced labor that was used by the Spanish colonist throughout the 1500s. The remaining Taíno intermixed with Europeans or African slaves and no full-blooded Taíno remained after the 1600s, though many Cubans today do have Taíno DNA and are descendants of those intermixed Taínos.
