Dolls (2002 Film)
is a 2002 Japanese film written, edited and directed by Japanese director Takeshi Kitano. A highly stylized art film, ''Dolls'' is part of Kitano's non-crime film oeuvre, like 1991's ''A Scene at the Sea'', and unlike most of his other films, he does not act in it. The film has been praised for its cinematography (Katsumi Yanagishima) and features costumes by Yohji Yamamoto. Takeshi Kitano
is a Japanese comedian, television presenter, actor, filmmaker, and author. While he is known primarily as a comedian and TV host in his native Japan, he is better known abroad for his work as a filmmaker and actor as well as TV host. With the exception of his works as a film director, he is commonly known by the stage name . Kitano rose to prominence in the 1970s as one half of the comedy duo ''Two Beat'', before going solo and becoming one of the three biggest comedians in the country. After several small acting roles, he made his directorial debut with 1989's '' Violent Cop'' and garnered international acclaim for '' Sonatine'' (1993). He was not widely accepted as an accomplished director in Japan until ''Hana-bi'' won the Golden Lion in 1997. A Scene At The Sea
is a 1991 Japanese drama film written, edited and directed by Takeshi Kitano starring Claude Maki. Plot A deaf garbage collector happens upon a broken and discarded surfboard. The discovery plants in him dreams of becoming a surf champion. Encouraged by his also deaf girlfriend, he persists against all odds. Production This movie was a break from previous Kitano fare in that it features no gangsters or police. However, Kitano did return to darker themes in his next film, '' Sonatine'', as well as many later works. In the film, Kitano develops his more delicate, romantic side along with his trademark deadpan approach. In 2002, the Japanese filmmaker directed a similar movie, ''Dolls'', a romantic tale about three pairs of lovers. Ren Osugi
, born was a Japanese actor. For his work in ''Cure'', ''Hana-bi'' and other films, Osugi was given the Best Supporting Actor award at the 1999 Yokohama Film Festival. He often worked alongside Takeshi Kitano and Susumu Terajima. In the DVD commentary to the ''MPD Psycho'' television series, director Takashi Miike said that he admired Osugi's experience to shift quickly from comic and imbecilic to authoritative and earnest. He died of heart failure at the age of 66 on February 21, 2018. Kayoko Kishimoto
is an actress. She appeared in several of Takeshi Kitano's films, such as ''Hana-bi'', ''Kikujiro'' and ''Dolls''. She won the award for best supporting actress at the 23rd Japan Academy Prize for ''Kikujiro''. Biography In 1976 at a Hideki Saijo concert in Yokohama Dreamland, Kishimoto was scouted by Saijo and joined the agency. She debuted in the 1977 TBS drama “Mu” and first appeared as an idol in TV dramas, movies and commercials. She also began singing. She became a serious TV and movie actress, winning several well-known awards. Chikamatsu Monzaemon
was a Japanese dramatist of jōruri, the form of puppet theater that later came to be known as bunraku, and the live-actor drama, kabuki. The ''Encyclopædia Britannica'' has written that he is "widely regarded as the greatest Japanese dramatist". His most famous plays deal with double-suicides of honor bound lovers. Of his puppet plays, around 70 are ''jidaimono'' (時代物) (historical romances) and 24 are ''sewamono'' (世話物) (domestic tragedies). ''The Courier for Hell'' or ''Courier of Hell'' (''Meido no hikyaku'' 冥途の飛脚) is a love-suicide play by the Japanese writer Chikamatsu Monzaemon, written in 1711.
