Doirani
Doirani ( el, Δοϊράνη) is a town and former municipality in the Kilkis regional unit, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Kilkis, of which it is a municipal unit. It is situated on the shores of Doiran Lake, which marks the border between Greece and North Macedonia. The municipal unit has an area of 81.213 km2 (31.4 sq mi). It had a population of 1,404, according to the 2011 census. It is the Greek part of the former municipality of Doyuran, which was divided in 1913 by the new borders created between Greece and what was then Serbia. The part on the other side of the border is called Dojran. The name comes from the ancient name Doviros. Geography Doirani is located on the southwestern shores of Lake Doirani, on the border between Greece and North Macedonia. Doirani Railway Station
Doirani railway station ( el, Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός Δοϊράνης, Sidirodromikós stathmós Doïrani) is a railway station that serves the nearby town of Doirani, in Kilkis in Central Macedonia, Greece. The station is located (15 Min walk) southeast of the settlement but still within the settlement limits. The station is located close to the Greek Military Cemetery of Doirani. History The station opened in 1896 as part of the Salonica Monastir railway, built by the Enotikos Thessalonica-Istanbul Company Built in the French architectural style when the line was opened. The station, along with the vital railhead, was annexed by Greece on 18 October 1912 during the First Balkan War. Kilkis ( el, Περιφερειακή ενότητα Κιλκίς) is one of the regional units of Greece, in the geographic region of Macedonia. It is part of the region of Central Macedonia. Its capital is the city of Kilkis. Geography The geography of the regional unit of Kilkis is characterized by the wide and flat Axios river valley in the westcentral part, and mountain ranges on its western and northeastern edges. Kilkis
Kilkis ( el, Κιλκίς) is a city in Central Macedonia, Greece. As of 2011 there were 22,914 people living in the city proper, 28,745 people living in the municipal unit, and 51,926 in the municipality of Kilkis. It is also the capital city of the regional unit of Kilkis (regional unit), Kilkis. Doiran Memorial
The Doiran Memorial is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission war memorial that is both a battlefield memorial and a memorial to the missing. It honours the dead of the British Salonika Force as well as commemorating by name the 2171 missing dead of that force who fell in fighting on the Macedonian front during the First World War in the period 1915–1918. Located near the village of Doirani in Greece on the south-eastern shores of Lake Doiran, the memorial was placed near the border that then existed between Greece and Serbia, and which is now the border between Greece and North Macedonia. The memorial is near a CWGC cemetery called Doiran Military Cemetery and stands on a mound that was called Colonial Hill (the cemetery was originally called Colonial Hill Cemetery No.2). Doiran Lake
Doiran Lake (, ''Dojransko Ezero''; , ''Límni Dhoïráni''), also spelled Dojran Lake is a lake with an area of shared between North Macedonia () and Greece (). To the west is the city of Nov Dojran (Нов Дојран), to the east the village of Mouries, to the north the mountain Belasica/Beles and to the south the Greek town of Doirani. The lake has a rounded shape, a maximum depth of and a north-to-south length of and is at its widest, making it the third largest lake partially in North Macedonia after Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. History The lake was on the southern line of the Macedonian front during World War I, and its southern shore became the site of the various battles between allied troops and Bulgarian troops in 1916, 1917 and 1918. Dojran
Dojran ( mk, Дојран ) was a city on the west shore of Lake Dojran in the southeast part of North Macedonia. Today, it is a collective name for two villages on the territory of the ruined city: Nov Dojran (New Dojran, settled from the end of World War I to World War II) and Star Dojran (Old Dojran), which contains both old ruins and recent construction, especially hotels, resorts, and restaurants.
