Dog Lake (Ontario)
Dog Lake is a lake in northwestern Ontario, Canada which drains south through the Kaministiquia River to Thunder Bay on Lake Superior. It was on the voyageur route to western Canada. Its name comes from a large aboriginal effigy of a dog on a nearby hill. The lake is primarily fed by Dog River (Ontario), Dog River and seasonal melting of the snow. It includes Silver Falls Provincial Park and it is a back-up drinking water supply for the City of Thunder Bay. Development of new summer homes (locally referred to as "Camps") is not permitted. As such, properties on Dog Lake are in high demand when available and the body of water has little boat traffic unlike lakes in Southern Ontario. Dog Lake is a dammed lake with regular rising and falling of water levels due to the hydro-electric dam. It is common to find aboriginal artifacts in and around the lake. Brighton is a town in eastern Salt Lake County, Utah, United States. It is part of the Salt Lake City, Utah Metropolitan Statistical Area. Description Brighton is located at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon and covers an area of . While the exact number of residents is unknown, as of 2018, the population was estimated to be between 180 and 260. Both the Brighton Ski Resort and the Solitude Mountain Resort are located in Brighton. History The area was first settled in 1871 but remained unincorporated. Le Sueur County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,674. Its county seat is Le Center. Le Sueur County is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul- Bloomington, MN- WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Minnesota Territory legislature established several counties in 1853. Skaha Lake is a freshwater lake, through which the Okanagan River flows, in the Okanagan region of south central British Columbia. Along the shoreline are Penticton (north), Kaleden (west), and Okanagan Falls (south). Name origin The lake was labelled L. du Chien on Anderson's map (1867) and Du Chien L. on Trutch maps (1866 and 1871). Likely named by French Canadian fur traders, the origin is unknown. The translation as Dog Lake was later adopted. When changed to Skaha Lake in 1930, the Shuswap name for dog was mistakenly chosen. The Okanagan meaning of Skaha is horse.
