Dodge Glacier
Dodge Glacier ( da, Dodge Gletscher), is a glacier in northwestern Greenland. Administratively it belongs to the Avannaata municipality. The glacier was named by Isaac Israel Hayes (1832 – 1881) after expedition member Henry W. Dodge during the American Arctic Expedition of 1860 – 1861. Geography The Dodge Glacier has its terminus in the Smith Sound, east of Cape Alexander (Ullersuaq), north of the Storm Glacier. The Dodge and Storm glaciers don't discharge directly from the Greenland Ice Sheet, but from an ice cap located at the southwestern end of Inglefield Land which is attached to the Ice Sheet from the southeast. In the same manner as the neighboring Storm Glacier, the Dodge Glacier has retreated significantly in recent years. Cape Alexander, Greenland
Cape Alexander ( kl, Ullersuaq, also ''Uvdlerssuak'' and ''Sarfalik''; da, Kap Alexander) is a headland in the Baffin Bay, northwest Greenland, Avannaata municipality. It is one of the important landmarks of Greenland. Geography Cape Alexander is located in Prudhoe Land, at the western end of Hartstene Bay with the Dodge Glacier to the east and the Storm Glacier to the southeast. This headland is the westernmost point of the island of Greenland. Sutherland Island (Tigssarfik) lies off the shore to the southeast. Inglefield Land
Inglefield Land is an unglaciated area along the northwestern coast of Greenland. It was named after English explorer Edward Augustus Inglefield. History Inglefield Land is noted for its archaeological sites, which show evidence of occupation by the Dorset Culture and Thule Culture. Geography The region stretches from Cape Alexander to the southwest to Cape Agassiz at the eastern end. In glaciology, an ice cap is a mass of ice that covers less than of land area (usually covering a highland area). Larger ice masses covering more than are termed ice sheets. Description Ice caps are not constrained by topographical features (i.e., they will lie over the top of mountains). By contrast, ice masses of similar size that ''are'' constrained by topographical features are known as ice fields. The ''dome'' of an ice cap is usually centred on the highest point of a massif. The Greenland ice sheet ( da, Grønlands indlandsis, kl, Sermersuaq) is a vast body of ice covering , roughly near 80% of the surface of Greenland. A storm is any disturbed state of the natural environment or the atmosphere of an astronomical body. It may be marked by significant disruptions to normal conditions such as strong wind, tornadoes, hail, thunder and lightning (a thunderstorm), heavy precipitation (snowstorm, rainstorm), heavy freezing rain (ice storm), strong winds (tropical cyclone, windstorm), wind transporting some substance through the atmosphere such as in a dust storm, among other forms of severe weather. A glacier terminus, toe, or snout, is the end of a glacier at any given point in time. Although glaciers seem motionless to the observer, in reality glaciers are in endless motion and the glacier terminus is always either advancing or retreating. The location of the terminus is often directly related to glacier mass balance, which is based on the amount of snowfall which occurs in the accumulation zone of a glacier, as compared to the amount that is melted in the ablation zone. The position of a glacier terminus is also impacted by localized or regional temperature change over time.
