English Language
English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, with its earliest forms spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. Frederick William Dobson
Frederick William Dobson, VC (9 November 1886 – 15 November 1935) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Dobson was 27 years old, and a private in the 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, British Army during the First World War when the following deed at the First Battle of the Aisne took place for which he was awarded the VC. On 28 September 1914 at Chavonne, Aisne, France, Private Dobson twice volunteered to go out under heavy fire to bring in two wounded men. This undertaking involved crossing a good deal of open ground in full view of the enemy. Private Dobson, however, crawled out and found one of the men dead and the other wounded. Chris Dobson
Sir Christopher Martin Dobson (8 October 1949 – 8 September 2019) was a British chemist, who was the John Humphrey Plummer Professor of Chemical and Structural Biology in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, and Master of St John's College, Cambridge. Early life and education Dobson was born on 8 October 1949 in Rinteln, Germany, where his father, Arthur Dobson was commissioned as an officer. Both Arthur Dobson and Christopher Dobson's mother, Mabel Dobson (née Pollard), were originally from Bradford in Yorkshire and had left school at age 14. Dobson had two older siblings, Graham and Gillian. Due to his father's postings, Dobson also lived in Lagos, Nigeria. Brian Dobson (archaeologist)
Brian Dobson (13 September 1931 – 19 July 2012) was an English archaeologist, teacher and scholar. His specialisms were Hadrian's Wall and the Roman Army. He studied under Eric Birley and is a member of the so-called 'Durham School' of archaeology. He was a Reader Emeritus of Durham University. Personal life Dobson was born in Hartlepool in 1931 to a Plymouth Brethren family, attended school in Stockton before attending the University of Durham in 1949 to read Modern History as a member of Hatfield College. Ruth Dobson
Ruth Violet Lissant Dobson (5 October 191814 December 1989) was an Australian public servant and diplomat. Life and career Ruth Dobson was born in Neutral Bay, NSW on 5 October 1918. Her younger sister was the poet Rosemary Dobson. Dobson was just seven years old when her father died. Dobson joined the Commonwealth Public Service in 1943 as a research assistant in the Department of External Affairs, having unsuccessfully applied for a cadetship earlier that year. In 1965, Dobson was seconded to Government House as private secretary to Lady Casey. Her 16 month secondment was followed by an appointment as First Secretary in the Australian Embassy in the Philippines. John Dobson (Canadian Politician)
John Dobson (8 September 1824 – 27 January 1907) was a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada from 23 February 1892 until his death. Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of John Dobson and Mary Henry, he was educated at the Public Schools. After residing in Toronto for a few years he moved to Lindsay, Ontario. He was elected Mayor of Lindsay by acclamation in 1873, and also to the office of President of the Board of Trade. Jo-Anne Elizabeth Dobson (née Elliott; born 3 January 1966) is a former Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) politician who was a Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MlA) for Upper Bann from 2011 to 2017. Henry Dobson (24 December 1841 – 10 October 1918) was an Australian politician, who served as a member of the Tasmanian House of Assembly and later of the Australian Senate. He was the 17th Premier of Tasmania from 17 August 1892 to 14 April 1894. Frank Dobson
Frank Gordon Dobson (15 March 1940 – 11 November 2019) was a British Labour Party politician. As Member of Parliament (MP) for Holborn and St. Pancras from 1979 to 2015, he served in the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Health from 1997 to 1999, and was official Labour Party candidate for Mayor of London in 2000, though finishing third in the election behind Conservative Steven Norris and the winner, Labour-turned-Independent Ken Livingstone. Benjamin Alfred Dobson
Colonel Sir Benjamin Alfred Dobson (1847–1898) was an English textile machinery manufacturer and mayor of Bolton. He was chairman of Dobson & Barlow, the company co-founded in 1790 by his great-great-uncle Isaac Dobson. Early life and family Dobson was born in Douglas, Isle of Man on 27 October 1847. His father Arthur Dobson was from Belfast, but was the great-nephew of Isaac Dobson, founder of Dobson & Barlow. He was educated at Carlisle Grammar School and the Collegiate Institute, Belfast. His first job was with the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway before he moved to England in 1869 to join Dobson & Barlow. Simon Dobson
Simon Dobson (born 1981) is an English composer particularly noted for his brass band compositions. Biography Dobson was born in Cornwall, England. Having grown up in a brass banding family, he was educated at Launceston College where he was taught by the influential Rob Strike. Dobson moved to London at age 18 on a scholarship to study composition under Timothy Salter, Theo Verby and George Benjamin, at the Royal College of Music. While at college, Dobson wrote music for many different ensembles including, wind orchestra, string orchestra, percussion ensemble and the RCM symphony orchestra. He received his first commission, from the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002 during his second year of study.
