John Dobson (Canadian Politician)
John Dobson (8 September 1824 – 27 January 1907) was a Conservative member of the Senate of Canada from 23 February 1892 until his death. Born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, the son of John Dobson and Mary Henry, he was educated at the Public Schools. After residing in Toronto for a few years he moved to Lindsay, Ontario. He was elected Mayor of Lindsay by acclamation in 1873, and also to the office of President of the Board of Trade. He was President of the South Victoria Agricultural Society and Chairman of the School Board. He was also President of the South Victoria Conservative Association for over 25 years. Lindsay is a community of 22 367 people (2021 Canadian Census, 2021 census) on the Scugog River in the Kawartha Lakes (Ontario), Kawartha Lakes region of south-eastern Ontario, Canada. It is approximately west of Peterborough, Ontario, Peterborough. It is the seat of the Kawartha Lakes, City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County, Ontario, Victoria County), and the hub for business and commerce in the region. History The Township of Ops was surveyed in 1825 by Colonel Duncan McDonell, and Lots 20 and 21 in the 5th Concession were reserved for a town site. The same year settlers began to come to the region, and by 1827, the Purdys, an American family, built a dam on the Scugog River at the site of present-day Lindsay. John Joseph Caldwell Abbott
Sir John Joseph Caldwell Abbott (March 12, 1821 – October 30, 1893) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the third prime minister of Canada from 1891 to 1892. He held office as the leader of the Conservative Party. Abbott was born in what is now Saint-André-d'Argenteuil, Quebec. He studied law at McGill University and became one of Montreal's best-known lawyers, later returning to McGill as a professor of law and earning a Doctor of Civil Law degree. He was perhaps best known for his successful defence of the perpetrators of the St. Albans Raid. Abbott involved himself in politics from a young age, signing the Montreal Annexation Manifesto in 1849which he later regrettedand winning election to the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in 1860.
