Dobell Prize
The Dobell Drawing Prize is a biennial drawing prize and exhibition, held by the National Art School in association with the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation.The prize is an open call to all artists and aims to explore the enduring importance of drawing and the breadth and dynamism of contemporary approaches to drawing. About The Dobell Drawing Prize is one of the highest value prizes for drawing in Australia. The prize had previously been held in conjunction with the Archibald Prize, Sulman Prize, Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. The Dobell Drawing Prize, now held at the National Art School, runs in alternative years to the Dobell Australian Drawing Biennial at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The prize was initiated by the Trustees of the Sir William Dobell Art Foundation. In 2003, the prize money was $20,000. National Art School
The National Art School (NAS) is a tertiary level art school, located in , an inner-city suburb of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The school is an independent accredited higher education provider offering specialised study in studio arts practice across various disciplines. With its origins in the formation of Sydney Mechanics’ School of Arts in 1843, NAS has been in operation on the historic Darlinghurst Gaol site in East Sydney in various forms since 1922 and was formerly part of East Sydney Technical College, known as East Sydney Tech. Euan Macleod
Euan Macleod (born 1956) is a New Zealand-born artist. Macleod was born in Christchurch, New Zealand and moved to Sydney, Australia in 1981, where he lives and works. He received a Certificate in Graphic Design from Christchurch Technical College in 1975 and a Diploma in Fine Arts (Painting) from the University of Canterbury in 1979. As well as pursuing his art he also teaches painting at the National Art School in Sydney. Style Macleod deals mostly with landscapes and the human presence within it. Gareth Sansom
Gareth Sansom (born 19 November 1939) is an Australian artist, painter, printmaker and collagist and winner of the 2008 John McCaughey Memorial Prize of $100,000. Best known for introducing new themes and subject-matter into Australian art and being one of the first Australian artists to be influenced by Pop art, particularly British Pop artists like Peter Blake, Allen Jones, Derek Boshier, Joe Tilson and the formal strategies of the post-modernist R. Anne Judell
Anne Judell (born 1942) is an Australian artist and winner of the 2011 Dobell Prize for drawing. Judell was born in Melbourne in 1942, and studied at RMIT University. She moved to Sydney in 1977 and then to the New South Wales southern highlands in 1992, returning to Melbourne in 2014. The work of Judell was the subject of a 2002 exhibition at Campbelltown Arts Centre. A 2007 drawing executed in gesso and charcoal on Hahnemühle paper, ''First light'', was selected for inclusion in the Blake Prize exhibition. In 2011, after having been a finalist nine times, she won the Dobell Prize for a triptych, ''Breath'', done in pastel on paper. Virginia Grayson
Virginia Grayson (born 1967), also known as Ginny Grayson, is a New Zealand-born Australian artist, and winner of the Dobell Prize for Drawing. Biography Grayson was born in 1967 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. She trained in film and media studies at Victoria University of Wellington. In the early 1990s she moved to New York for a period, before moving to Sydney, and later to Melbourne. She trained at the RMIT School of Art, and held an exhibition in the School's gallery in 2009. In 2008, Grayson was working in a studio in Melbourne. In September that year, it was announced that she had won that year's Dobell Prize for Drawing, displayed at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, in a competition that had 586 entries. Nicholas Harding (1956 – 2 November 2022) was a British-born Australian artist, known for his paintings, in particular portraits. Early life Harding was born in London, England in 1956. In 1965 his family emigrated to Australia, settling in the Sydney suburb of Normanhurst. He became an Australian citizen in 1974. David Fairbairn (artist)
David Fairbairn (born 1949), is an Australian painter and printmaker who was the winner of the Dobell Prize for Drawing in 1999. He has been selected as a Dobell Prize Finalist fifteen times, won the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize in 2002 and has been exhibited in the Archibald Prize eight times.
