Diving At The 1930 British Empire Games
At the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, there were two aquatics disciplines – swimming and diving. There were four diving events contested and eleven swimming events. The aquatics programme included the only women's events of the games. These events were held at the Municipal Pool (now the Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool), which was built specifically for these games. 1930 British Empire Games
The 1930 British Empire Games were the inaugural edition of what now is known as the Commonwealth Games, and were held in Hamilton, Ontario, from 16 to 23 August 1930. The games were organized by ''Hamilton Spectator'' sportswriter Bobby Robinson after he attended the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam as manager of the Canadian track and field team and was inspired to create a similar event for the British Empire. After campaigning for the idea among contacts he met at the Olympics, he was asked to organise the first British Empire Games in Hamilton. The events included athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rowing, swimming, and wrestling. Women competed only in aquatic events. The opening ceremonies and many events were held at Civic Stadium (later renamed Ivor Wynne Stadium) in east Hamilton. Norman Brooks (swimmer)
Norman Standish Brooks (11 March 1910 – 23 September 1953) was an English competition swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics and England in the British Empire Games during the late 1920s and early 1930s. He competed in freestyle swimming events. At the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he competed in the qualifying heats of the men's 100-metre freestyle. His time was the 17th best overall; he did not advance to the semi-finals. Frederick Milton
Frederick George Matt Milton (21 October 1906 – August 1991) was an English water polo player and competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain at the Olympics and England at the British Empire Games during the 1930s. He was part of the British water polo team that finished eighth at the 1936 Summer Olympics. He played four matches. He was born in Marylebone, Great Britain. As a swimmer, he won a silver medal in the 4×200 yards freestyle relay at the 1930 British Empire Games in Hamilton, Ontario. In the 400-yard freestyle he finished fifth. Stanley Bell
Stanley Bell (Jul/Aug 1907 – date of death unknown) was an English swimmer from Birkenhead, Cheshire. He won a silver medal at the 1930 British Empire Games in the 200 yard breast-stroke and was also noted in 1930 as holding the title for the Northern Championships. In September 1930, he beat the British record for the 200-yard breast stroke and beat that record a year later. Swimming Bell's first distinction in swimming came in 1923 when he became the breast-stroke champion of the Northern Juniors. John Besford
John Charles Preston Besford, OBE (30 January 1911 – 26 February 1993) was an English competitive swimmer who represented Great Britain in the Olympics and European championships, and England in the British Empire games, during the 1930s. Besford competed primarily in the backstroke. He was born in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire, England. and died in Spain. Besford was European 100-metre backstroke champion in 1934. He won the bronze medal for England at the 1930 British Empire Games and silver at the 1934 British Empire Games in London, both in the 100-yard backstroke event. George Burleigh (swimmer)
George Burleigh (1914–1984) was a Canadian swimmer. He won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 1930 and 1934. and held Canadian freestyle swimming records in the 1930s. Early life In 1925, Burleigh joined the West End YMCA in Toronto. He had been given his membership as a Christmas present from his grandmother. He later described it as "probably one of the best things that ever happened to me".
