in Los Angeles, he was eliminated in the first round of the men's 100-metre backstroke. At the 1930 British Empire Games he won the silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke contest. Four years later at the Empire Games in Sydney he won the gold medal in the 100-yard backstroke. He was also a member of the Scottish team which won the silver medal in the 3×110-yard medley relay. He also participated in the 1938 Empire Games but was unplaced in the 110-yard backstroke contest.
