The District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula was a local government area in South Australia from 1969 to 1997. The council seat was at Maitland. History The District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula was formed on 1 April 1969 with the amalgamation of the Corporate Town of Maitland and the original District Council of Yorke Peninsula at the request of the two councils. It had seven wards at its inception: Kilkerran, Maitland Township, Maitland District, Ardrossan Township, Cunningham, Wauraltee and Muloowurtie, each electing two councillors. It initially operated out of the Maitland and District Hall, which was refurbished for this purpose, but in 1983 moved into an office block in Elizabeth Street, Maitland. It was proclaimed in 1869 by Governor Fergusson after whom the county was named. Description The County of Fergusson covers the part of Yorke Peninsula "lying to the south of the south boundary of the County of Daly, including Wauraltee Island", the county boundary approximately aligning with Price town centre. History The County of Fergusson was proclaimed by Sir James Fergusson, the eighth Governor of South Australia on 18 February 1869 along with three of its constituent hundreds, Melville, Moorowie and Para Wurlie. The Yorke Peninsula Council is a local government area in South Australia. Its boundaries include most of the Yorke Peninsula. The council seat is at Maitland; the council also maintains branch offices at Minlaton and Yorketown. History It came into existence on 10 February 1997 as a result of the amalgamation of the District Council of Central Yorke Peninsula, the District Council of Minlaton, the District Council of Warooka and the District Council of Yorketown. The District Council of Minlaton was a local government area in South Australia from 1888 to 1997 seated at Minlaton on the Yorke Peninsula. History The District Council of Minlaton was officially proclaimed on 5 January 1888 by the ''District Councils Act 1887'' as constituting the Hundreds of Curramulka, Koolywurtie and Minlacowie, and the unincorporated portion of the Hundred of Ramsay. "DISTRICT OF MINLATON.—Comprising the Hundreds of Curramulka, Koolywurtie, and Minlacowie, and that portion of the Hundred of Ramsay not heretofore included in the District of Dalrymple." This cluster of adjacent hundreds spanned the entire width of the peninsula at Minlaton for about north to south. Port Victoria, South Australia
Port Victoria (formerly Wauraltee) is a town on the west coast of Yorke Peninsula in the Australian state of South Australia. At the , Port Victoria had a population of 345. Like many other coastal towns on the peninsula, it has a jetty and used to be a thriving port for the export of grain to England. Its anchorage is sheltered from westerly weather by nearby Wardang Island. The windjammers carrying the bagged grain called at Falmouth, England or Queenstown, Ireland for orders of where the grain was to be taken. Many of the smaller ports were visited only by coastal ketches and schooners. Port Victoria also had an anchorage offshore for the larger windjammers. These were loaded from the ketches which were in turn loaded at the jetty. The peak of the windjammer trade, the Great Grain Race, was in the 1930s; the last working sailing ships visited in 1949. Pine Point, South Australia
Pine Point (formerly Muloowurtie) is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia on the east side of Yorke Peninsula adjacent to Gulf St Vincent. It was surveyed as a government town in 1883 and proclaimed under the name of Muloowurtie on 24 January 1884. The name was changed to Pine Point in 1940. The boundaries of the locality were created in May 1999 in respect to the "long established name" and includes both "the Pine Point Shack Site" and " the Government Town of Pine Point." Ardrossan, South Australia
Ardrossan is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located on the eastern coast of the Yorke Peninsula, about by road from the Adelaide city centre. It is notable for its deepwater shipping port and its towering coastal cliffs of red clay. History The Aboriginal Australian people who are the traditional owners of the land on which Ardrossan was developed were the Narungga people.
