Theodor Van Pee
Theodorus van Pee (1668–1746) was an 18th-century painter and art dealer from the Northern Netherlands. Biography Born in Amsterdam in 1668 or 1669, he was a son of the painter Jan van Pee and his wife Hendrika. His father moved to Antwerp when Theodor was still a child, and the boy was brought up in the household of his maternal grandparents in Amsterdam. At the age of eighteen he was apprenticed to a jeweller in order to qualify for admission to the Goldsmiths’ Guild in the city but, when twenty, he sought his father’s permission to abandon his articles and train as a painter. His father initially withheld consent, counselling that the life of an artist was precarious and that "the golden wings of Mercury offer better shelter than the flimsy wings of Saint Luke" (Luke being the patron saint of painters). However, in the face of his son’s sustained entreaties, the elder van Pee eventually relented. Theodor is generally said to have become his father’s pupil but hi ...

Jan Ekels The Elder
Jan Ekels the Elder (1725–1780) was a Dutch painter of veduta's. His pictures are generally of a small size, and are highly finished, with a good effect of light and shade. He was born near Oude Kerk, Amsterdam at Bierkaai. The family was obviously catholic, not much is known about his baptism. His father ran a paint shop; his uncle was an alcoholic. At the age of 28, he became paralyzed. As a result, he was only able to perform light work. He married Maria Abt in 1756 and had his three children baptized in the Mozes en Aäronkerk and in a hidden church in the Kalverstraat. Jan Wagenaar mentions that Jan Ekels was in training with Jan ten Compe and a pupil of Dirk Dalens III, Dirk Dalens, the younger. His work is influenced by Jan van der Heyden. Jan Ekels could not make a living with his veduta's of Amsterdam and Maastricht; he earned more as a restorer of paintings. He lived at Herengracht, near De Krijtberg, but died at Kerkstraat, opposite Amstelkerk. Jan Eekels was bu ...
