Dirk Braeckman
Dirk Braeckman (born 1958 in Eeklo, Belgium) is a Belgian photographer who lives and works in Ghent, Belgium. The artist studied photography and film at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1977 until 1981. Photography career Dirk Braeckman has had numerous group exhibitions and several solo shows in Europe, including ones at Ghent's SMAK (2001)and the De Pont Foundation in Tilburg (2004). He has received considerable acclaim for his portraits of the Belgian king Albert II and Queen Paola, photographs commissioned by the Royal Palace of Brussels. In addition to his photographic body of work, Braeckman creates site specific installations, for varying projects such as ''Beaufort'' in Ostend or Watou's art and poetry festival. Recently a permanent installation of a monumental photowork (of which a facsimile is now presented at Robert Miller's Gallery) has been inaugurated at the new . Eeklo
Eeklo () is a Belgian municipality in the Flemish province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises only the town of Eeklo proper. The name ''Eeklo'' comes from the contraction of "eke" and "lo", two Old German words meaning ''oak'' and ''sparse woods'' (compare English ''Oakley''). History Origins and Middle Ages There are not many traces of early habitation in the Eeklo area. It is presumed that some oaks would have attracted the attention of travellers on the Roman road that ran along the local sandbar among the marshes. By 1240, a town had grown here and had already become important enough to warrant a civic charter by Jeanne of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Ghent ( nl, Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent, KASK) is an art school that is one of the oldest art schools in Belgium. It is now part of the Hogeschool Gent. History The Academy was founded in 1748 as a school for drawing by the painter, Philippe Karel Marissal, at his home. During his studies in Paris, Marissal had become impressed by the , and was inspired to create a similar establishment in his home city.
