The Diocese of Matanzas is a Latin Church ecclesiastic territory or diocese of the Catholic Church in Cuba. It is a suffragan diocese in the ecclesiastical province of the metropolitan Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana. The diocese was erected 10 December 1912. Charles Warren Currier
Bishop Charles Warren Currier (March 22, 1857 in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, USA - September 23, 1918 in Maryland, USA) was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matanzas (1913–1914). His parents were Warren Green Currier (born in New York) and Deborah Heyliger of the Netherlands. He studied at the College of Our Lady of the Assumption, Roermond, Limburg, the Netherlands, and at Saint Alphonsus Seminary in Wittem, Limburg. He joined the missionary order the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) in 1875 and was ordained a priest on November 24, 1880 in Amsterdam by Bishop Henry Schaap (vicar apostolic of Surinam). In January 1881, he arrived in Surinam for his first missionary assignment where he remained until 1882. In November 1891 he was allowed to leave the Redemptorists and then worked in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Felipe de Jesús Estévez (born February 5, 1946) is a Cuban-born prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who was bishop of the Diocese of St. Augustine in Florida from 2011 to 2022. Estévez previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Miami in Florida from 2003 to 2011. Biography Early life Felipe Estévez was born in Pedro Betancourt, Cuba on February 6, 1946. He fled to the United States as a young man under Operation Peter Pan, a program to bring Cuban children to the United States. Jaime Lucas Ortega Y Alamino
Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino (18 October 1936 – 26 July 2019) was a Cuban prelate of the Catholic Church who served as Archbishop of Havana from 1981 to 2016. He was appointed to the College of Cardinals in 1994, the second Cuban to hold that distinction. Early life and ordination Ortega was born on 18 October 1936 in Jagüey Grande, Matanzas, Cuba. He studied for priesthood at the Seminary of San Alberto Magno in Matanzas and in the Seminary of Foreign Missions in Laval, Quebec, Canada. He was ordained a priest on 2 August 1964 by Bishop José Domínguez Rodríguez of Matanzas. He was assigned to various parishes in the Diocese of Matanzas from 1964 to 1966. Bishop Mariano Vivanco Valiente (3 April 1933 in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba – 23 August 2004 in Matanzas, Cuba) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matanzas (1987–2004). Bishop Juan Alberto de la Merced Martín y Villaverde (2 May 1904 – 3 November 1960) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matanzas (1938–1960). Severiano Sainz Y Bencamo
(7 November 1871 in Pinar del Río, Cuba - 14 March 1937 in Matanzas, Cuba) was the second bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matanzas (1915–1937). His parents were Juan Sainz y María Antonia Bencomo. When he was very young he was taken to Spain and commenced his studies with the Jesuits in Orduña. He later returned to Cuba and in 1891 he was studying at the San Carlos and San Ambrosio Seminary. He was ordained a priest on 23 December 1898 by Mons. Manuel Santander Frutos Bishop of Havana. On 19 September 1907, he was named Administrator of Cementerio Cristóbal Colón. In 1914, he was offered the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba and refused.
