Newton County is a county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,330. The county seat is Jasper. Newton County is Arkansas's 46th county, formed on December 14, 1842, and named for Thomas W. Newton, an Arkansas Congressman. It is an alcohol prohibition or dry county. Newton County is part of the Harrison, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Newton County residents were divided during the Civil War, serving in both the Confederate and Union armies. John Cecil, who had served as Newton County's sheriff, served as a Confederate Captain. Jasper blacksmith James R. Dinsmore Township is one of the fourteen townships of Shelby County, Ohio, United States. The 2000 census found 3,357 people in the township, 1,371 of whom lived in the unincorporated portions of the township. Dinsmore is an unincorporated community in Wharton County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 250 in the early 1990s. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History Dinsmore was established as an African American community by E.W. Roberts. It is located on John Dinsmore's league of land. The plat was established in 1913 and was originally named Roberts, but the settlers called it Dinsmore. It comprised 38 blocks; nine avenues ran east to west while six streets ran north to south and were named for locals. They were small and cheap and gave the descendants of former slaves somewhere to build a home. These settlers worked as tenant farmers and sharecroppers. They also hired agricultural workers. It is located near Burr, which had the largest Black population in the county due to plantations along Caney Creek. Dinsmore Alter (March 28, 1888 – September 20, 1968) was an American astronomer, meteorologist, and United States Army officer. He is known for his work with the Griffith Observatory and his creation of a lunar atlas. Early life He was born in Colfax, Washington, and attended college at Westminster College in Pennsylvania. Dinsmore Bridge
The Dinsmore Bridge is a crossing over the middle arm of the Fraser River, and a former section of River Rd., in Metro Vancouver. History Dinsmore Island In the 1870s, John Brough, who acquired this island adjacent to Sea Island, built a small house and farmed what became Brough Island. Hugh Boyd purchased the 210-acre property, but resold to John Errington, who dyked and drained the land in the 1880s. The Goodmurphy cannery, which opened in 1894, was incorporated the following year as the Dinsmore Island Canning Co. by John Dinsmore, M.B. Wilkinson, W.D. Goodmurphy, and Caleb Goodmurphy. The cannery presence renamed the location to Dinsmore Island. In the early 1900s, BC Packers acquired the cannery along with many others along the arms of the Fraser. The plant was demolished in 1913. In 1920, Bob Doherty purchased Dinsmore Island and Pheasant Island in a tax sale. The Dinsmore Homestead is a historic house museum. The property contains a house completed in 1842 and several outbuildings. It is located at 5656 Burlington Pike ( Kentucky Route 18), west of Burlington, Kentucky. Overview In 1839, James and Martha Dinsmore purchased approximately in Boone County, Kentucky. He and his family, which included daughters, Isabella Dinsmore, Julia Dinsmore, and Susan Dinsmore, settled there, and with the help of slave labor, raised sheep and grew grapes and willows for a basket-making business that was overseen by German immigrants. The house is notable for containing all original artifacts that were purchased by the family primarily in Cincinnati, Ohio, and southern Indiana. Some of the stores they shopped at over the years included Shillito's, McAlpin's, Gest & Bruns, and Hunnewell, Hill & Co., all early Cincinnati establishments.
