Frances Dinkelspiel
Frances L. Dinkelspiel (born 1959) is an American journalist, author and founder of the local news website ''Berkeleyside''. She is the author of ''Towers of Gold: How One Jewish Immigrant Named Isaias Hellman Created California'' and ''Tangled Vines: Greed, Murder, Obsession, and an Arsonist in the Vineyards of California''. Education A fifth-generation Californian, Dinkelspiel attended Stanford University (B.A. 1982) and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism (M.S. 1986). Career In 2010, journalists Lance Knobel and Tracey Taylor joined Dinkelspiel in founding Berkeleyside, a local news website about the city of Berkeley, California.In 2018, Berkeleyside raised US$1 million through a direct public offering. Lazarus Dinkelspiel
Lazarus Dinkelspiel (1824–1900) was an American businessman who founded L. Dinkelspiel & Co. Biography Dinkelspiel was born in 1824 to a Jewish family in Michelfeld, Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1833, his family immigrated to the United States first to New York and then New Hampshire. In 1845, he moved to California and was successful selling goods to the gold miners. In 1853, he moved to San Francisco where he opened a wholesale dry goods business with Ulrich Simon, a fellow German Jewish immigrant; the business was named Simon & Dinkelspiel. In 1861, they added Jonas Adler as a partner and the company became Simon, Dinkelspiel, & Adler in New York City and Simon, Dinkenspiel & Co in San Francisco. In 1867, Dinkelspiel bought his partners out and the company was then known as L. Dinkelspiel & Co. His company became one of the largest dry goods businesses in the Western states. Moses Dinkelspiel
Moses Dinkelspiel (June 3, 1855 – May 30, 1916) was an American politician from New York. Life He was born on June 3, 1855, in New York City. He was a salesman, a commission merchant, and then a dealer in pictures and artworks. He also entered politics as a Democrat. Dinkelspiel was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1886. In January 1888, he was appointed as Paymaster at the U.S. Customs House at the port of New York. Soon after he was accused of being involved with gamblers and bookmakers, and he did not take office. He was again a member of the Assembly in 1889, 1890, 1891, 1892, 1893 and 1894. He was Chairman of the Committee on Trade and Manufactures in 1892; and of the Committee on Public Institutions in 1893. In April 1893, he married Carrie Sladkus, and they had two children. He died on May 30, 1916, at his residence at 226 West 97th Street in Manhattan,
