Lazarus Dinkelspiel
Lazarus Dinkelspiel (1824–1900) was an American businessman who founded L. Dinkelspiel & Co. Biography Dinkelspiel was born in 1824 to a Jewish family in Michelfeld, Kingdom of Württemberg. In 1833, his family immigrated to the United States first to New York and then New Hampshire. In 1845, he moved to California and was successful selling goods to the gold miners. In 1853, he moved to San Francisco where he opened a wholesale dry goods business with Ulrich Simon, a fellow German Jewish immigrant; the business was named Simon & Dinkelspiel. In 1861, they added Jonas Adler as a partner and the company became Simon, Dinkelspiel, & Adler in New York City and Simon, Dinkenspiel & Co in San Francisco. In 1867, Dinkelspiel bought his partners out and the company was then known as L. Dinkelspiel & Co. His company became one of the largest dry goods businesses in the Western states. Congregation Emanu-El of San Francisco, California is one of the two oldest Jewish congregations in California, and one of the largest Jewish congregations in the United States. A member of the Union for Reform Judaism, Congregation Emanuel-El is a significant gathering place for the Bay Area Jewish community. History During the Gold Rush in 1849, a small group of Jews held the first High Holy Days services on the west coast of the United States in San Francisco. Württemberger Emigrants To The United States
The Württemberger, Baden-Württemberger or Württemberg is a Warmblood horse breed originating in Germany. They are primarily riding horses, and are selectively bred for dressage and show jumping. Breed History The breed registry studbook was founded in 1895, and around 1896, the Marbach stud began concentrating on the original Württemberger type, which was a multi-purpose horse used for both draft and under-saddle work. The original horses were produced by introducing Arabian, Trakehner, Anglo-Norman, Friesian, Spanish, Barb, and Suffolk Punch blood to local warmblood lines. An Anglo-Norman stallion named Faust was a significant early influence on the breed, and contributed to the original shape of the breed.
