Dingwall Pursuivant of Arms is a current Scottish pursuivant of arms of the Court of the Lord Lyon. Dingwall Pursuivant was formerly a private officer of arms in the service of the Lord of the Isles, but along with Kintyre Pursuivant, Ross Herald, and Islay Herald became an officer of arms to the Scottish Crown when the Lord of the Isles forfeited his estates and titles to James IV of Scotland in 1493. A pursuivant or, more correctly, pursuivant of arms, is a junior officer of arms. Most pursuivants are attached to official heraldic authorities, such as the College of Arms in London or the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh. In the mediaeval era, many great nobles employed their own officers of arms. Today, there still exist some private pursuivants that are not employed by a government authority. In Scotland, for example, several pursuivants of arms have been appointed by Clan Chiefs. These pursuivants of arms look after matters of heraldic and genealogical importance for clan members. Charles John Burnett is a Scottish antiquarian and former officer of arms. Burnett was born in 1940 and educated at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen, and the University of Edinburgh. Charles Ian Fraser of Reelig (1903 – 1963) was a Scottish British Army officer, historian and officer of arms. Fraser was a commissioned officer in the Lovat Scouts. He served in the Second World War and in 1942 he was awarded the Efficiency Decoration. In 1944 he was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Inverness-shire. He was confirmed in the honorary rank of Major in 1951. He was later granted the honorary rank of Colonel. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 1962 New Year Honours for his work as Chairman of the Territorial and Auxiliary Forces Association of the County of Inverness.
