Diggins, Missouri
Diggins is a village in southeastern Webster County, Missouri, United States. The population was 299 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Diggins was laid out in 1887, and named after one Mr. Diggins, a railroad official. The site was previously known as Cut Throat, Stella and Livingston. A post office called Diggins has been in operation since 1886. Geography Diggins is located on the southeastern edge of the Springfield Plateau in the Ozarks of south central Missouri. The village is located along U.S. Route 60 between Fordland, four miles to the west and Seymour, four miles to the east. Bartholomew Diggins (October 9, 1844 – February 23, 1917) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of America's highest military decoration—the Medal of Honor—for actions in the American Civil War. Biography Bartholomew Diggins was born in County Kerry Ireland. He entered the U.S. Navy from Maryland and served during the Civil War as an ordinary seaman on Rear admiral (United States), Rear Admiral David Farragut's flagship . Despite heavy gunfire at the Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama, on August 5, 1864, Diggins continually loaded a gun during the two-hour battle which damaged batteries at Fort Morgan (Alabama), Fort Morgan and ended with the surrender of . He was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his conduct during this action. Benjamin Howard Diggins (born June 13, 1979) is an American former professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Milwaukee Brewers. Amateur career Diggins was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 1998 Major League Baseball Draft, but did not sign. He was later drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft and signed on August 23, . He attended the University of Arizona where he was a ''Baseball America'' Freshman All-American in 1999 and a consensus All-American as a sophomore in 2000. Brighton John Diggins (born Bryton John Diggins, 26 December 1906 – 14 July 1971) was an Australian rules footballer in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and Victorian Football League (VFL). Family The son of Arthur Oswald Diggins (1878–1933) and Lucy Dolphin "Dolly" Diggins (1886–1945), née Mountain, Diggins was born on 26 December 1906. He married Amanda Eileen Murphy in 1928. Jessica Diggins (born August 26, 1991) is an American cross-country skier. She and teammate Kikkan Randall won the United States' first ever cross-country skiing gold medal at the Winter Olympics in the team sprint in 2018. At the 2022 Winter Olympics, Diggins won the silver medal in the 30 kilometer freestyle and the bronze medal in the individual sprint, making her the most decorated American cross-country skier of all time. She also won four medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships from 2013 to 2017. In 2021, Diggins clinched the top spot in the women's overall standings for the 2020–21 FIS Cross-Country World Cup, becoming the first American to do so. John Patrick Diggins (April 1, 1935 – January 28, 2009) was an American professor of history at the University of California, Irvine, Princeton University, and the City University of New York Graduate Center. He was the author/editor of more than a dozen books and thirty articles on widely varied topics in U.S. intellectual history. Early life and education Diggins was born in San Francisco to John Diggins, Sr., who worked for the City of San Francisco as a gardener, and Anne Naughton Diggins. Skylar Kierra Diggins-Smith (born August 2, 1990) is an American professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Diggins was drafted third overall by the Tulsa Shock in the 2013 WNBA draft. In high school, she was the National Gatorade Player of the Year and the Gatorade Female Athlete of the Year. Diggins played point guard for Notre Dame, where she led Notre Dame to three consecutive Final Fours and two consecutive NCAA championship appearances.
