Diggers Rest Football Club
The Diggers Rest Football Netball Club, nicknamed the Burras, is an Australian rules football and netball club and is located 38 km north west of Melbourne in the town of Diggers Rest and is affiliated with the Riddell District Football League. The club first played in the Riddell District Football League in 1978, and lost their first game to Broadford by 260 points. The club's first win was in 1979 when they defeated Lancefield by 10 points. Riddell District Football League
The Riddell District Football Netball League (RDFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball league in Victoria, Australia. The RDFNL covers towns in the Macedon Ranges and an area from Rockbank in the south to Broadford in the north. The league also runs junior competitions from Under 10 to Under 18 age groups. Brief history 1970s This decade saw Hesket club go into recess and the introduction of new clubs Craigieburn, Melton and Melton South. In 1975 the league went two divisional, With eight teams in First Division and six clubs in Second Division. Numbers were boosted by the return of Trentham and Hesket clubs. 1977 saw Broadford and a second team from Sunbury join the league. Diggers Rest joined in 1978. 1980s 1985 saw the league return to one division with twelve clubs. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Diggers Rest (formerly Diggers' Rest) is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the Cities of Hume and Melton local government areas. Diggers Rest recorded a population of 5,669 at the 2021 census. Diggers Rest lies on the Old Calder Highway, near the Calder Freeway. History Diggers Rest began life as a stopping place on the road to the Bendigo goldfields, with the Post Office opening on 18 June 1860. Caroline Chisholm started a women's shelter in the area. The town grew in the 1870s and 1880s and became a postal village with a general store, post office, weighbridge, mechanics' institute and a chaff mill. The Diggers Rest Hotel was built by 1854, and later enlarged, and became an important stopping place on the route to the goldfields. It was severely damaged by fire in 2012.
