Die Krokodile
''Die Krokodile'' ('The Crocodiles') was a small poets' society in Munich which existed from 1856 to the 1870s. Background and beginnings King Ludwig I had constructed the Glyptothek and the Pinakothek to house art collections. Part of his intention was to attract intellectual luminaries to Munich, with little result before the efforts made by his successor Maximilian II. Among others came the chemist Justus von Liebig, the ethnologist Wilhelm Heinrich Riehl and the historian Heinrich von Sybel. Two poets who arrived in Munich were Emanuel Geibel and Paul Heyse. In 1852 they joined the cultural society '' Die Zwanglosen'', founded in 1838, which was intended to serve as a meeting-place for both native Bavarians and the new arrivals, the so-called ''Nordlichter'' ("northern lights"). Young Germany (german: Junges Deutschland) was a group of German writers which existed from about 1830 to 1850. It was essentially a youth ideology, similar to those that had swept France, Ireland, the United States and Italy. Its main proponents were Karl Gutzkow, Heinrich Laube, Theodor Mundt and Ludolf Wienbarg; Heinrich Heine, Ludwig Börne and Georg Büchner were also considered part of the movement. Karl August von Heigel (25 March 1835 in Munich – 6 September 1905), a German novelist, was the son of a régisseur or stage-manager of the court theatre in Munich. In that city he received his early schooling and studied (1854–1858) philosophy at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He was then appointed librarian to Prince Heinrich zu Carolath-Beuthen in Lower Silesia, and accompanied the nephew of the prince on travels. In 1863 be settled in Berlin, where from 1865 to 1875 he was engaged in journalism. Max Haushofer
Maximilian Joseph Haushofer (12 September 1811 – 24 August 1866) was a German landscape painter and professor of landscape painting at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts. Biography He was born in Nymphenburg, the son of a tutor at the court of the Bavarian King Maximilian I. Haushofer's godfather was the King himself. At first, at the wish of his father, he studied law, but soon turned to painting. In 1828 he moved with some friends to the shores of the Chiemsee, where he taught himself to draw from nature. Here he married Anna Dumbser, daughter of the proprietor of the ''Inselwirt'' on the island of Frauenchiemsee, and made a temporary home. Julius Braun (writer)
Julius Braun (16 July 1825 in Karlsruhe – 1869 in Munich) was a German historian, with an interest in art, culture and religion. Biography Braun was born in Karlsruhe and received his early education at the city's lyceum. He then studied at the universities of Heidelberg and Berlin, at first theology, but later philology and art history. He finished his formal studies in 1848, and passed the test for teachers in Karlsruhe that same year. From 1850 to 1853, he undertook an extensive study tour which brought him to Egypt, Syria, Asia Minor, Rome, Paris and London. At first a ''privatdozent'' in the University of Heidelberg (1853), he later became a professor at the University of Tübingen for a short period of time (from 1860). However he wished to reach a wider audience and find a more stimulating atmosphere. Thus he finally went to Munich, where he lectured in the Academy of Arts.
