"Devils Ball" is a song by the Swiss duo Double, released in 1987 as the lead single from their second studio album ''Dou3le''. It was written and produced by Kurt Maloo and Felix Haug. The song featured a guest appearance from Herb Alpert, who played trumpet on the track, and an electric violin solo by Michał Urbaniak. Background Following the duo's breakthrough success with their 1985 album ''Blue'', and the hit single " The Captain of Her Heart", Double began working on a follow-up album in early 1987, which was released later that year as ''Dou3le''. The leading single, "Devils Ball", was released in October and reached No. 71 in the UK, lasting within the Top 100 for four weeks. It also reached No. 30 in Belgium. Double (band)
Double was a Swiss music duo best known for their hit single " The Captain of Her Heart". Biography The duo was formed in 1983 in Zürich, Switzerland, by Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals) out of the trio Ping Pong of which both Maloo and Haug were members. Ping Pong formed in 1981, and had some early success with a single entitled "Rhythm Walk". They also recorded with Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music, though due to legal issues none of their collaborations were able to be released. Ping Pong had some success with singles and several appearances around Europe in music festivals. Prior to releasing their debut album, the duo issued a few singles, of which "Naningo", "Rangoon Moon", and "Woman of the World" were the most popular. ''The Blood of a Poet'' (french: Le sang d'un poète) (1930) is an avant-garde film directed by Jean Cocteau, financed by Charles de Noailles and starring Enrique Riveros, a Chilean actor who had a successful career in European films. "The Captain of Her Heart" is a song by the Swiss duo Double (Felix Haug and Kurt Maloo) from their debut studio album, ''Blue'' (1985). The song is a ballad about a woman who stops waiting for her absent lover to return. The single was an international success, reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 16 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100, thus making Double the first Swiss act to reach the top 40 on the latter chart. Background Keyboardist Felix Haug had recorded a demo melody on his Oberheim synthesizer, "very '80s style", several months before Double went into the studio to record their first album. In the studio, singer Kurt Maloo heard this melody and was interested. The sound engineer suggested Haug play it on a grand piano, instead of '80s-style synthesizer, as a guide for Maloo's vocals. Michał Urbaniak (born January 22, 1943) is a Polish jazz musician who plays violin, lyricon, and saxophone. His music includes elements of folk music, rhythm and blues, hip hop, and symphonic music. History He was born in Warsaw, Poland. Urbaniak started his music education during high school in Łódź, Poland, and continued from 1961 in Warsaw in the violin class of Tadeusz Wroński. Learning to play on the alto saxophone alone, he first played in a Dixieland band, and later with Zbigniew Namysłowski and the Jazz Rockers, with whom he performed during the Jazz Jamboree festival in 1961. ''Dou3le'' is the second and final studio album by Swiss musical duo Double, released in 1987 by Metronome. Despite including the acclaimed single " Devils Ball", it failed to emulate the success of its predecessor ''Blue''. Background and release Having finished extensive promotion for their previous album, ''Blue'', and the commercially successful single " The Captain of Her Heart", Double soon returned to the studio to record their next album ''Dou3le''. It was recorded between February and June 1987 at Powerplay Studios in Maur, Switzerland, at Britannia Row Studios in London and at A&M Studios in Los Angeles. As soon as recording sessions started, the duo faced musical differences over the direction of Double's sound. Herb Alpert (born March 31, 1935) is an American trumpeter who led the band Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s. During the same decade, he co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss. Alpert has recorded 28 albums that have landed on the ''Billboard'' 200 chart, five of which became No. 1 albums; he has had 14 platinum albums and 15 gold albums. Alpert is the only musician to hit No. 1 on the U.S. ''Billboard'' Hot 100 as both a vocalist ("This Guy's in Love with You", 1968) and an instrumentalist ("Rise", 1979).
