''Det Nødvendige Seminarium'' (DNS) ( en, The Necessary Teacher Training College) is a private international college located in Denmark. DNS offers a four-year programme in alternative pedagogy, combining theoretical studies and practical experiences. The students enrolled in DNS also enrol in a distance learning programme offered by ISET - One World, a Teacher Training institution based in Mozambique, from which they receive their licentiate in Pedagogy. The licentiate is equivalent to a Bachelor Degree, although it is not clear to what extent it is accepted in Europe. DNS was founded in Denmark in 1972 and has since educated hundreds of teachers now working all over the world in positions related to alternative education for children, youngsters and adults. Tvind is the informal name of a confederation of private schools, humanitarian organizations, and businesses, founded as an alternative education school in Denmark circa 1970. The organization is controversial in Denmark, where it runs a number of schools primarily for troubled youth. Some former students and employees have described the organization and its controlling body, the Teachers Group, as a political cult. Investigations by journalists and law-enforcement agencies have suggested the presence of an extensive money-laundering network within the group's commercial and non-profit ventures, wherein charitable funds are diverted to private businesses and individuals, including several of the group's leaders. Ulfborg
Ulfborg-Vemb was a municipality (Danish language, Danish, ''Commune (subnational entity), kommune'') in the former Ringkjøbing County on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula in west Denmark. By January 1, 2007, Ulfborg-Vemb municipality ceased to exist due to Municipalities of Denmark#Municipal Reform 2007, ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" of 2007). Alternative Education
Alternative education encompasses many pedagogical approaches differing from mainstream pedagogy. Such alternative learning environments may be found within state, charter, and independent schools as well as home-based learning environments. Many educational alternatives emphasize small class sizes, close relationships between students and teachers and a sense of community. Paulo Reglus Neves Freire (19 September 1921 – 2 May 1997) was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate of critical pedagogy. John Dewey
John Dewey (; October 20, 1859 – June 1, 1952) was an American philosopher, psychologist, and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. Learning-by-doing
Learning by doing refers to a theory of education. This theory has been expounded by American philosopher John Dewey and Latinamerican pedagogue Paulo Freire. It's a hands-on approach to learning, meaning students must interact with their environment in order to adapt and learn. Freire highlighted the important role of the individual development seeking to generate awareness and nurture critical skills. Dewey implemented this idea by setting up the University of Chicago Laboratory School. His views have been important in establishing practices of progressive education. For instance, the learn-by-doing theory was adopted by Richard DuFour and applied to the development of professional learning communities. Education in Denmark is compulsory ( da, undervisningspligt) for children below the age of 15 or 16, even though it is not compulsory to attend ''Folkeskole'' ("public school").
