Carla DeSola
Carla DeSola (born 1937) is a choreographer, teacher, and performer who has built her reputation as a pioneer and advocate of liturgical dance over more than 40 years. In 1974 she founded the Omega Liturgical Dance Company which was soon based at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York. In the 1990s she founded the Omega West Dance Company in the San Francisco Bay area. A Carla DeSola collection is being developed in the archives of the Graduate Theological Union library in Berkeley, Ca. David de Aaron de Sola or David Aaron de Sola (1796–1860) ( he, דוד אהרן די סולה) was a rabbi and author, born in Amsterdam, the son of Aaron de Sola. Family history and education David Aaron De Sola was descended from a distinguished family of Sephardim, who emigrated from Spain in 1492 on the expulsion of the Jews from that country by Ferdinand and Isabella. The family seems to have settled mainly in Holland and includes, among others, the preacher Isaac de Sola (1675-1735) and Dr. Benjamin de Sola (1735-1816), who served as court physician to William, Prince of Orange. At just eleven years of age, David Aaron de Sola entered as a student to the ''bet ha-midrash'' in Amsterdam, studying diligently, and after a course of nine years received his rabbinical diploma from Haham d'Azevdo of Amsterdam who stated that de Sola was "to the fullest extent competent to discharge rabbinical functions...and assume the ministerial office in every city." Abraham De Sola
Abraham de Sola (; September 18, 1825 – June 5, 1882) was a Canadian rabbi, author, Orientalist, and academic. Originating from a large renowned family of rabbis and scholars, De Sola was recognized as one of the foremost leaders of Orthodox Judaism in North America during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Early life and education Born in London, England, the sixth child of David Aaron de Sola and Rebecca Meldola. His maternal grandfather was '' ḥakham'' Raphael Meldola, a prominent English rabbi. His sister Eliza married Rabbi Abraham Pereira Mendes and was the mother of Rabbis Frederick de Sola Mendes and Henry Pereira Mendes. Meldola De Sola
Aaron David Meldola de Sola (; 22 November 1853 – 29 April 1918) was the first native-born Canadian rabbi. He succeeded his father Abraham de Sola as leader of the Shearith Israel synagogue in Montreal upon the latter's death in 1882. Biography Meldola de Sola was born in Montreal in 1853, the eldest son of Esther () and Rabbi Abraham de Sola. His rabbinical studies were pursued chiefly under the direction of his father, whose assistant he became in 1876. He was elected as his father's successor in 1882. On a number of occasions he was invited to deliver sermons at the Congregation Shearith Israel in New York and Bevis Marks Synagogue in London. Frederick de Sola Mendes (July 8, 1850 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, West Indies – October 26, 1927 in New Rochelle, New York) was a rabbi, author, and editor. Family history and education Frederick de Sola Mendes was born into an old Spanish & Portuguese rabbinic family. He was the son of Rabbi Abraham Pereira Mendes, grandson of Rabbi David Aaron de Sola, and great-grandson of Haham Raphael Meldola. He was also brother of Rabbi Henry Pereira Mendes. He was educated at Northwick College and at University College School, London, and at the University of London (B.A. 1869). Sasha De Sola is an American ballet dancer. She is a principal dancer at the San Francisco Ballet. Early life De Sola was born in Winter Park, Florida. Both of her parents are musicians.
