André Desmarais (born October 26, 1956) is a Canadian businessman and philanthropist. Early life He is the youngest son of Paul Desmarais Sr. and Jacqueline Desmarais. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, he attended Lakefield College School in Ontario for two years, then Selwyn House School. Desmarais is a graduate of Concordia University in Montreal (BComm 78, LLD 07). Odilon Desmarais, (February 27, 1854 – May 18, 1904) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in Quebec. He represented Saint-Hyacinthe in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1890 to 1892 and St. James in the House of Commons of Canada from 1896 to 1901 as a Liberal. He was born in Joliette, Canada East, the son of Jean-Baptiste Desmarais and Émérentienne Beauchamps, and was educated at the Collège de Joliette and McGill University. Desmarais articled in law with Alexandre Lacoste, was called to the Quebec bar in 1876 and practised in Saint-Hyacinthe with Honoré Mercier and in Montreal. Mathurin Desmarestz (1653-1700, last name also Demarais) was a French pirate and buccaneer active in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Indian Ocean. Charles Desmarais (born April 21, 1949) is the Art Critic for the ''San Francisco Chronicle''. A native of the Bronx, Desmarais earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the State University of New York, Buffalo, and was a 1983 participant in the Museum Management Institute (later the Getty Leadership Institute program of the Getty Foundation).
