Deshabandu
Deshabandu ( si, දේශබන්දු, translit=dēśabandu; ta, தேசபந்து, translit=Tēcapantu, translation=Patriot) is the third highest Sri Lankan honours system, national honour awarded in Sri Lanka. It is awarded "for meritorious service". The title is held by no more than 150 living holders at any time. It is conferred with a citation and a silver medal with a symbol of a peacock. It is conventionally used as a title or prefix to the awardee's name. Deshabandu ranks lower than Deshamanya. In the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, individuals are recognized for personal bravery, achievement, or service with the with national honours. Wimala De Silva
Deshabandu Wimala de Silva (2 June 1920 – 15 April 2007) was a prominent Sri Lankan educationist and social activist. She was a former chancellor of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura and founding principal of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, which is now regarded as one of the leading national schools in Sri Lanka. During her lifetime, she was widely known for her research and efforts on raising issues and concerns regarding the gender inequality in Sri Lanka. Career She graduated from the University of Ceylon in 1942 at the age of 22 and won scholarship for postgraduate studies at the Institute of Education in London. In the same institute, she obtained her Teacher's Diploma in 1949. Wimala founded the Devi Balika Vidyalaya at the age of 32 in 1953 and served as the head principal of the school for over ten years. Wickremasinghe Wimaladasa
Deshabandu Wickramesinghe Wimaladasa (born 29 August 1943) is a Sri Lankan former sprinter who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He won two gold medals at the 1974 Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran, in the men's 400m and relay events. Wimaladasa received his education at Nugawela Salvation Army Primary School and Alawwa Central, where he took part in athletics at school and district level. He enlisted in the Ceylon Army in 1963 and was attached to the 1st Battalion, Gemunu Watch. In 1964, he became the champion of 100 metres and 200 metres in the inter-regiment athletic meet and in 1965 set a 100 meters new national record. Following his gold medal in Tehran, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and later commissioned an officer. He retired from the Sri Lanka Army in 1998 as a colonel. Michael Tissera
Michael Hugh Tissera (born 23 March 1939 in Colombo) is a former Sri Lankan ODI cricketer who played in the 1975 Cricket World Cup. School Tissera was educated at S. Thomas' College, Mount Lavinia, where, initially appearing in 1954 aged fourteen, he captained the Thomian cricket team in the Royal–Thomian series, known as "The Battle of the Blues", in 1957 and 1958. He made his first-class debut in March 1959, in the annual Gopalan Trophy encounter between Ceylon and Madras. International career Tissera captained Ceylon to its first victory over a Test-playing nation in Ahmedabad in 1965, when his bold declaration in a low-scoring match led to victory over India by four wickets. He was selected as vice-captain for the tour of England with the Ceylon team in 1968, but the tour was cancelled just before it was due to begin. Hudson Silva
Deshabandu Dr F. G. Hudson Silva was the founder and president of the International Eye Bank, Tissue Bank, and the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society. He was an honorary Fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka. Early life and education Hudson was educated at Nalanda College, Colombo. Medical Student and campaign to collect corneas In 1958 as a medical student, he launched his campaign to collect corneas. He received his first set of corneas in 1959, storing them in his home refrigerator at Wijerama Mawatha in Colombo. With the help of his wife Iranganie (née de Silva Kularatne), Silva established the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society in 1961. He pursued his campaign and succeeded in persuading the majority Buddhist population of Sri Lanka that the donation of eyes after death was a meritorious act. Sri Lankabhimanya Ahangamage Tudor Ariyaratne ( Sinhala:අහන්ගමගේ ටියුඩර් ආරියරත්න, born 5 November 1931) is a Sri Lankan founder and president of the Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in Sri Lanka. He was nominated to the Constitutional Council as a civil representative on 10 September 2015. He received the Jamnalal Bajaj Award in 1991. Biography A.T. Ariyaratne was born on 5 November 1931 in Unawatuna village in Galle District of Ceylon. He had his school education at Buona Vista College, Unawatuna and Mahinda College, Galle. Then he attended a teachers college, after which he was a high school teacher until 1972 at Nalanda College Colombo. Ariyaratne started his work on Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement in 1958. Emblem Of Sri Lanka
The national emblem of Sri Lanka is used by the State of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lankan government in connection with the administration and government of the country. The current emblem has been in use since 1972 and created under the ideas and guidance of Nissanka Wijeyeratne. At the time, he was Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Chairman of the National Emblem and Flag Design Committee. The designer of the emblem was Venerable Mapalagama Wipulasara Maha Thera, and the artwork was by S. M. Seneviratne.
