Deserters Group
The Deserters Group is a small group of islands in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, located off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island to the north of Port Hardy. Deserters Island is one of the islands in the group, another is Wishart Island. Name origin The name refers to a group of eight men who had been crew on the ''Norman Morrison, a Hudson's Bay Company vessel, who deserted the vessel while it was moored in Suquash Harbour, upon hearing news of gold in the Cariboo. Two stories relate their demise at the hands of local natives, one saying that the natives had mis-interpreted the ship's captain's offer to pay money per head, which was taken literally and so the men were killed rather than taken captive and returned to the ship. Vancouver Island
Vancouver Island is an island in the northeastern Pacific Ocean and part of the Canadian Provinces and territories of Canada, province of British Columbia. Port Hardy
Port Hardy is a district municipality in British Columbia, Canada located on the north-east end of Vancouver Island. Port Hardy has a population of 4,132 as of the last census (2016). It is the gateway to Cape Scott Provincial Park, the North Coast Trail and the BC Marine Trail, located on the northernmost tip of Vancouver Island. The community has access to various outdoor activities, such as kayaking, caving, scuba diving, nature viewing, surfing, saltwater rapids, fishing and camping. Deserters Island
Deserters Island is an island in the Deserters Group archipelago in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada. Mahpahkum Indian Reserve No. 4 is located on the northwest end of the island. The name refers to the crew of the HBC vessel ''Norman Morrison'' who deserted that vessel and were killed on these islands by natives sent out to find and capture them. Wishart Island in this group, and the Wishart Peninsula on Broughton Island are named for James Wishart, one of the deserters. An A. Norman Morrison (ship)
Norman R. Morrison (December 29, 1933 – November 2, 1965) was an American anti-war activist. On November 2, 1965, Morrison doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire below the office of Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara at the Pentagon, to protest United States involvement in the Vietnam War. This action may have been taken after Thích Quảng Đức and other Buddhist monks, who burned themselves to death to protest the repression committed by the South Vietnam government of Catholic President Ngo Dinh Diem. Background Morrison was born in Erie, Pennsylvania and was raised Presbyterian. At 13, his family moved to Chautauqua, New York, where Morrison joined the Boy Scouts of America and entered the God and Country Program, becoming the youngest BSA member in Chautauqua County to earn a God and Country award. Hudson's Bay Company
The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC; french: Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson) is a Canadian retail business group. A fur trading business for much of its existence, HBC now owns and operates retail stores in Canada. Cariboo
The Cariboo is an intermontane region of British Columbia, Canada, centered on a plateau stretching from Fraser Canyon to the Cariboo Mountains. The name is a reference to the caribou that were once abundant in the region. The Cariboo was the first region of the interior north of the lower Fraser River and its canyon to be settled by non-indigenous people, and played an important part in the early history of the colony and province. Fort Rupert
Fort Rupert is the site of a former Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) fort on the east coast near the northern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The unincorporated community on Beaver Harbour is about by road southeast of Port Hardy. Coal & fortifications In 1835, the HBC became aware of coal deposits in the area, but no market existed until a steamboat presence emerged a decade later. Realizing the closing of Fort McLoughlin in the early 1840s had been a mistake, the HBC sought a new location partly motivated by Admiralty interest in coal. In 1849, men under the charge of Captain William Henry McNeill, assisted by John Work, erected Fort Rupert. Richard Blanshard
Richard Blanshard Master of Arts, MA (19 October 1817 – 5 June 1894) was an England, English barrister and first Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia, governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island from its foundation in 1849 to his resignation in 1851. Biography Blanshard was born in London to a wealthy mercantile family, and after reading law at Cambridge University, served in the army in British India. At the age of 32, a personal connection helped secure Blanshard the post of colonial governor of Vancouver Island. Although the commission was dated in July, 1849, Blanshard did not arrive in the colony's capital of Victoria, British Columbia, Fort Victoria until March of the following year.
