Derry And District League
The Derry and District League is an amateur football league in Derry. The league includes youth and senior football teams. The Senior Sunday league football, Sunday League has two divisions, the Premier and the First Division. The Youth Leagues have one league for each age group, from under-10 up to under-17. Teams such as Don Bosco's and Tristar Boys have numerous teams competing at every level. Other senior teams include Brandywell Harps, Trojans F.C., Trojans and, in the First Division, Lisahally. The league has witnessed a rise in popularity in recent years, and youth teams, such as Foyle Harps and the Derry and District Youth Select have competed on an international level both in China and Spain respectively. There is also a Saturday Morning League operating in Derry. The League also sends youth teams to the Foyle Cup and in 2005 the under-16 team finished runners up in the competition, losing out to Ferencvárosi TC, Ferencváros. Derry
Derry, officially Londonderry (), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fifth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name ''Derry'' is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name (modern Irish: ) meaning 'oak grove'. The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). Darron Gibson
Darron Thomas Daniel Gibson (born 25 October 1987) is an Irish professional footballer who last played as a midfielder for League Two club Salford City, and formerly for the Republic of Ireland national team. Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, he began his club career with Institute before joining Manchester United, for whom he made his professional debut in 2005. Aaron McEneff
Aaron McEneff (born 9 July 1995) is an Irish professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Perth Glory in the A-League. McEneff was born in Derry and played youth football with Institute and Tottenham Hotspur before starting his professional career with Derry City. In November 2020, he was called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the Nations League game against Bulgaria. David Ogilby (footballer)
David Ogilby (born 2 June 1984) is a Northern Irish footballer who plays for Lisahally. Career Youth Ogilby was born in Derry and grew up in the village of Strathfoyle. Ogilby joined local youth team Moorfield at Under 10 level and continued playing with them to under 16 level. Ogilby then signed for Lisahally. It was at Lisahally where he was asked to play for the Institute youth team and subsequently progressed through to the first team. Institute After playing only two games for Lisahally, Burns sent Ogilby on trial to Institute F.C. Samuel Morrow (born 3 March 1985) is a Northern Irish former professional association footballer who played as a striker. Playing career Youth Morrow, who was raised in Limavady, County Londonderry, started as a youth at Institute. Ipswich Town Morrow began his professional career at Ipswich Town where he made his debut as an 18-year-old in a League Cup match versus Notts County. Ryan McBride (footballer)
Ryan McBride (15 December 1989 – 19 March 2017) was an Irish footballer who played as a defender for Derry City in the League of Ireland. Career After stints with Brandywell Harps in the Derry and District League, Institute and a trial with Gretna, McBride signed for Derry City in February 2010 and broke into the Derry side during the 2011 season. He made his debut for the senior squad against Drogheda on the first day of July 2011. Later that month he was called up to the League of Ireland XI side to take part in the 2011 Dublin Super Cup. Sean Hargan
Sean Hargan (born 6 November 1974 in Derry, Northern Ireland) was a veteran defender who played for Derry City and Crusaders, Hargan retired at the end of 2009 with Crusaders. One of the veterans of the Derry City 1996–97 league-winning side, Hargan continued to play an integral part for the Candystripes and had his testimonial year in 2005, before moving to Crusaders at the end of 2008. Jimmy Kelly (Irish Footballer)
Jimmy Kelly (1911, Ballybofey, County Donegal, Ireland – November 1970) was an Irish footballer who played for, among others, Derry City, Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk. Kelly was one of the most prolific goalscorers ever to play in the (Northern) Irish League, scoring 748 goals in the league between 1928 and 1952. He also scored 12 goals during his time in the (Southern) League of Ireland and scored a further 193 in other competitions. Kelly was noted for having a powerful left footed shot. Kelly was a dual international and played for both Ireland teams – the IFA XI and the FAI XI. In 1932 he became the first (Northern) Irish League player to play for an FAI XI and in 1934 was a member of their first team to play in a World Cup qualifier. Paul Crossan (born 7 May 1973, also known as Rick O'Shea) is an Irish radio personality. He was born in Drimnagh, Dublin 12, grew up in Crumlin, and attended Drimnagh Castle Secondary School and later UCD. He has been a presenter on RTÉ 2fm since 2001.
