Derek James
Derek James (born 28 September 1960) is a South African professional golfer currently playing on the Sunshine Tour. James was born in Durban and lives in Southbroom with his wife and two children. He was the 1984 South African Strokeplay champion, his biggest amateur win. He turned professional later that year and joined the Sunshine Tour. He won his first title there in 1991, and would add six more wins between then and 1994. He was also runner-up in the South African Open in 1992, and won the Canadian Tournament Players' Championship in 1994, in addition to picking up three minor tournament victories in the United States. He retired from competitive golf in 1997, and is now the head professional at Southbroom Golf Club. 1982 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1982 Eisenhower Trophy took place 15 to 18 September at the Golf Club de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. It was the 13th World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 30 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. United States won the Eisenhower Trophy for the ninth time, finishing seven strokes ahead of the joint silver medalists, Japan and Sweden, with France finishing fourth. Luis Carbonetti, representing Argentina, had the lowest individual score, 4-under-par 284, a stroke better than Jay Sigel. The event was affected by political protests about the participation of South Africa. Eisenhower Trophy
The Eisenhower Trophy (World Men's Amateur Team Championships) is the biennial World Amateur Team Championship for men organized by the International Golf Federation. Since the tournament was first played in 1958, it is named after Dwight D. Eisenhower, the President of the United States at the time, who was a keen amateur golfer. The equivalent competition for women is the Espirito Santo Trophy. Results The 1958 championship resulted in a tie. There was an 18-hole playoff which Australia won with a score of 222 to the United States 224. From 1958 to 2000 the teams had four players with the best three scores counting for each round. The Iscor Newcastle Classic was a golf tournament formerly played on the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. It was first played in the 1980s when the Tour was known as the South African Winter Tour. The 1991 champion was Retief Goosen, who made the Newcastle Classic his first professional win. Goosen would go on to win two U.S. Opens. Southbroom
Southbroom is a coastal village in Ugu District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. It is located 143 km south-west of Durban, and 213 km south of Pietermaritzburg. The village was officially founded in 1933, and in the 2011 census had a population of 1,615 in 847 households.
