Deira
Deira ( ; Old Welsh/Cumbric: ''Deywr'' or ''Deifr''; ang, Derenrice or ) was an area of Post-Roman Britain, and a later Anglian kingdom. Etymology The name of the kingdom is of Brythonic origin, and is derived from the Proto-Celtic *''daru'', meaning 'oak' ( in modern Welsh), in which case it would mean 'the people of the Derwent', a derivation also found in the Latin name for Malton, . It is cognate with the modern Irish word (); the names for County Londonderry and the city of Derry stem from this word. History Brythonic Deira Following the Roman withdrawal from Britain a number of successor kingdoms rose in northern England, reflecting pre-Roman tribal territories. The area between the Humber and River Tees known as ''Deywr'' or ''Deifr'' corresponds to the tribal lands of the Parisi, bordered to the west and north by the Brythonic kingdoms of '' Elfed'' and '' Bryneich'' respectively, and to the east by the North Sea. Early Deira may have centred on Petuaria (moder ...

Dere, Iraq
Dere ( ku, دێرێ) is a village in Duhok Governorate in Kurdistan Region, Iraq. It is located in the Sapna valley in Amedi District. Dere is the sister village of Komane. In the village, there is a church of Mar Abdisho. Etymology The name of the village ( syr, Dere, "monasteries" or "dwellings") has been argued to refer to the presence of the monasteries of Mar Abdisho and of Mar Qardagh. History The Church of the East monastery of Mar Abdisho at Dere was founded in the 4th-century AD atop a hill above the village known as Bshīsh. At one point, it was served by 42 monks who resided in nearby caves. It has been suggested that the monastery was the seat of the metropolitan bishop Abdisho of Koma in 1580. A colophon of 1586 mentions that the monastery had been damaged by a recent earthquake and subsequently restored. It was the only monastery in the region mentioned in reports in 1607 and 1610 but had probably been abandoned by 1753, in which year it was granted to the Do ...

Dere Street
Dere Street or Deere Street is a modern designation of a Roman road which ran north from Eboracum (York), crossing the Stanegate at Corbridge (Hadrian's Wall was crossed at the Portgate, just to the north) and continuing beyond into what is now Scotland, later at least as far as the Antonine Wall. Portions of its route are still followed by modern roads, including the A1 (south of the River Tees), the B6275 road through Piercebridge, where Dere Street crosses the River Tees, and the A68 north of Corbridge in Northumberland. Name The Roman name for the route is lost. Its English name corresponds with the post-Roman Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Deira, through which the first part of its route lies. That kingdom possibly took its name from the Yorkshire River Derwent. The term "street" derives from its Old English sense (from la, via strata), which referred to any paved road and had no particular association with urban thoroughfares. Portions of the road in Scotland were late ...
