Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1949 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for seventy-eight years. It was their forty-fifth season in the County Championship and they won six matches in the County Championship to finish in fifteenth place. 1949 season Derbyshire played 26 matches in the County Championship and one against the touring New Zealanders. DA Skinner was captain. Charlie Elliott scored most runs, and Cliff Gladwin took most wickets with 110 in the Championship. Laurie Johnson, who went on to become a major performer for the county, made his debut in 1949 while fellow West Indian Michael Frederick also made his debut, but only took part in two first class matches. This is a list of seasons played by Derbyshire County Cricket Club in English cricket, from the club's formation in 1870. Early years 1871–1887 Derbyshire played their first matches in 1871. For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Wilderness years 1888–1893 From 1888 Derbyshire's matches were not accorded first class status. Kenneth Shearwood
Kenneth Arthur Shearwood (5 September 1921 – 5 July 2018) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Oxford University between 1949 and 1951 and for Derbyshire in 1949. Shearwood was born in Derby and was educated at Shrewsbury School before going to Brasenose College, Oxford. He played minor counties cricket for Cornwall in 1947 and for Derbyshire second XI in 1948. He made five appearances as wicketkeeper for Oxford University between 1949 and 1951 when he made 5 catches and 4 stumpings. He played one match as wicketkeeper for Derbyshire in the 1949 season against Gloucestershire when he stumped one batsman. As a right-handed batsman he played 6 innings in 5 first-class matches at an average of 9 with a top score of 28. Shearwood was also an amateur footballer and represented Oxford University. Kent County Cricket Club
Kent County Cricket Club is one of the eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Kent. A club representing the county was first founded in 1842 but Kent teams have played top-class cricket since the early 18th century, and the club has always held first-class status. Gloucestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Gloucestershire. Founded in 1870, Gloucestershire have always been first-class and have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The club played its first senior match in 1870 and W. G. Grace was their captain. The club plays home games at the Bristol County Ground in the Bishopston area of north Bristol. Worcestershire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Worcestershire. Its Vitality Blast T20 team has been rebranded the Worcestershire Rapids, but the county is known by most fans as 'the Pears'. The club is based at New Road, Worcester. Les Jackson (cricketer)
Herbert Leslie Jackson (5 April 1921 – 25 April 2007) was an English professional cricketer. A fast or fast-medium bowler renowned for his accurate bowling and particular hostility on uncovered wickets, he played county cricket for Derbyshire from 1947 to 1963, and was regularly at, or near the top of, the English bowling averages. He played in only two Test matches for England, one in 1949 and a second in 1961. Jackson's absence from Test cricket was largely because his batting was so underdeveloped: his highest first-class score was 39 not out, and he reached 30 on only two other occasions. Between July 1949 and August 1950, Jackson indeed played fifty-one innings without reaching double figures, a number known to be exceeded only by Jem Shaw, Nobby Clark, Eric Hollies (twice), Brian Boshier and Mark Robinson. Warwickshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Warwickshire. Its T20 team is called the Birmingham Bears. Founded in 1882, the club held minor status until it was elevated to first-class in 1894 pending its entry into the County Championship in 1895. John Langridge
John George Langridge MBE (10 February 1910 – 27 June 1999) was a cricketer who played for Sussex. His obituary in ''Wisden'' called him "one of the best English cricketers of the 20th century never to play a Test match". Born into a cricketing family at Newick, north of Lewes, John Langridge followed his elder brother James into the Sussex side in 1928 and stayed there until he retired in 1955. In between, he scored more than 34,000 runs as an opening batsman and made 76 centuries, and was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1950. Considered unlucky not to have earned a place in the national team, only Alan Jones of Glamorgan has scored more runs but not played for his country, and no one who scored as many centuries as Langridge failed to win international recognition. Alan Revill
Alan Chambers Revill (27 March 1923 – 6 July 1998) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1946 and 1957 and for Leicestershire from 1958 to 1960. He scored more than 15,000 first-class runs. Revill was born in Sheffield, the son of Thomas who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1913 and 1920. Revill's career began at Derbyshire where he appeared in the non first-class programme in 1945. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1946 season at Ilford against Essex in May, scoring 31 and 48. He finished the year with 616 runs and played regularly for the county until the end of the 1957 season. with a career-best 156 not out against Leicestershire in 1949.
