Denzil Roberts Onslow
Denzil Roberts Onslow (15 June 1839 – 21 March 1908) was an English Conservative Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1874 to 1885. He played first-class cricket for Cambridge University from 1859 to 1861, Sussex from 1860 to 1869 and for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from 1861 to 1873. Onslow was born at Chittore, Madras, India, the second son of Thomas Onslow of the Madras Civil Service and his wife Elizabeth Sarah Roberts, daughter of Charles Roberts of Madras. He was the grandson of Denzil Onslow who was also a cricketer. He was educated at Brighton College where he played cricket in the first team between 1855 and 1858 and started playing for Gentlemen of Sussex. In 1858, he entered Trinity College, Cambridge. Onslow played cricket for Cambridge University in 1859 and took part in the Varsity matches in 1860 and 1861. He made his debut for Sussex in 1860 and played for MCC against Middlesex in 1861. 1880 United Kingdom General Election
The 1880 United Kingdom general election was a general election in the United Kingdom held from 31 March to 27 April 1880. Its intense rhetoric was led by the Midlothian campaign of the Liberals, particularly the fierce oratory of Liberal leader William Gladstone. He vehemently attacked the foreign policy of the government of Benjamin Disraeli, Earl of Beaconsfield, as utterly immoral. Liberals secured one of their largest-ever majorities, leaving the Conservatives a distant second. As a result of the campaign, the Liberal Commons leader, Lord Hartington (heir apparent to the Duke of Devonshire) and that in the Lords, Lord Granville, stood back in favour of Gladstone, who thus became Prime Minister a second time. It was the last general election in which any party other than the Conservatives won a majority of the votes (rather than a plurality). The 1885 United Kingdom general election was held from 24 November to 18 December 1885. This was the first general election after an Representation of the People Act 1884, extension of the franchise and Redistribution of Seats Act 1885, redistribution of seats. Guildford James Hillier Mainwaring-Ellerker-Onslow (29 March 1814 – 20 August 1882) was an English Liberal Party politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1858 to 1874. Guildford Onslow was the second of five sons of Colonel Thomas Cranley Onslow, whose father in turn was a wealthy late-18th-century British royal-family friend and politician, Thomas Onslow, 2nd Earl of Onslow. His flamboyant name – Guildford – is the county town of the county of Surrey and his family owned land and businesses in the county – was bolstered by the wealth of the father of his mother Susannah, Nathaniel Hillier, who owned the estate of Stoke Park House, Stoke-next-Guildford, Surrey. His father started a relatively briefly second-ranking branch of the Earl of Onslow's family, the land owning and land-developing heirs of much of the land of the Earls of Surrey which in 1870 became the senior branch of the family on the accession to the earldom of Guildford Onslow's nephew.
