Dennis Banda (politician)
Dennis George Banda (born January 13, 1941) is a former farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Redberry from 1975 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Marcelin, Saskatchewan, the son of George Y. Banda and Margaret Fern Hill. In 1963, he married Florence Elizabeth Hunchak. Banda served as a delegate for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. He served on the board for the Marcelin Co-operative Association for 29 years. Banda was president of Federated Co-operatives Ltd. from 1997 to 2005. He also served as president of Consumers’ Co-operative Refineries Ltd. Redberry (electoral District)
Redberry was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centred on the town of Hafford. This constituency was one of 25 created before the 1st Saskatchewan general election in 1905. Dissolved in 1934, the district was reconstituted before the 9th Saskatchewan general election in 1938, and renamed "Redberry Lake" in 1995. It is now part of the constituencies of Biggar and Rosthern-Shellbrook. Legislative Assembly Of Saskatchewan
The Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan is the legislative chamber of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the province of Saskatchewan, Canada. Bills passed by the assembly are given royal assent by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, in the name of the King in Right of Saskatchewan. The assembly meets at the Saskatchewan Legislative Building in Regina. There are 61 constituencies in the province, which elect members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to the Legislative Assembly. All are single-member districts, though the cities of Regina, Saskatoon and Moose Jaw were in the past represented through multi-member districts, with members elected through Block Voting. Saskatchewan New Democratic Party
The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is a social-democratic political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It currently forms the official opposition, but has been a dominant force in Saskatchewan politics since the 1940s. The party is the successor to the Saskatchewan section of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF), and is affiliated with the federal New Democratic Party. History Precursors The origins of the party began as early as 1902. In that year a group of farmers created the Territorial Grain Growers' Association. The objective of this group was to lobby for farmer's rights with the grain trade and the railways. Marcelin ( 2016 population: ) is a village in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan within the Rural Municipality of Blaine Lake No. 434 and Census Division No. 16. It was named after the first postmaster Antoine Marcelin in 1904. Marcelin is the administrative headquarters of the Muskeg Lake Cree First Nations band government. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool was a grain handling, agri-food processing and marketing company based in Regina, Saskatchewan. The Pool created a network of marketing alliances in North America and internationally which made it the largest agricultural grain handling operation in the province of Saskatchewan. Before becoming Viterra, SWP had operated 276 retail outlets and more than 100 grain handling and marketing centres. The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool operated under the name of AgPro in the prairie provinces of Manitoba and Alberta. Begun as a co-operative in the 1920s, the company became a publicly traded corporation in the 1990s. After the 2007 takeover of its competitor, Winnipeg-based Agricore United, the Pool name was retired. Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL), operating as Co-op, is a co-operative federation providing procurement and distribution to member co-operatives in Western Canada. It was established in 1944 after a series of amalgamations of smaller cooperatives, starting in Saskatchewan, including the Saskatchewan Co-operative Wholesale Society and a fuel production and distribution co-op, the Consumers’ Co-operative Refinery Limited. John Gerich
John Gerich (b. 1947) was a politician in Saskatchewan, Canada, MLA for Redberry, and former member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. He served as Associate Minister of Economic Development in the Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative government led by Grant Devine. Gerich was involved in the biggest political corruption scandal in Saskatchewan history, in which dummy companies provided receipts for false expense claims.
