The Denison Community School District is a rural public school district based in Denison, Iowa. The district is mainly in Crawford County, with a small area in Ida County. The district serves the towns of Denison, Buck Grove, Deloit, and Kiron, and the surrounding rural areas. The school's mascot is the Monarchs. Their colors are purple and gold. History Since 1994, through a sharing agreement with Schleswig Community School District, students from Schleswig attend high school in Denison, and compete as Denison-Schleswig. Mike Pardun has been the superintendent since 2003. Kiron is a town in Crawford County, Iowa, United States. The population was 267 at the time of the 2020 census. History Kiron was platted in 1899. It was supposedly named after a place in China. Another popular etymology is that the town was named after the Kidron Valley, in the Bible, but due to a typographical error, the D had been omitted. The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) is the regulating body for male Iowa high school interscholastic athletics and is a full member of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Its female counterpart, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, (IGHSAU) is an associate member. Iowa is the only state that maintains separate governing bodies for boys' and girls' athletics. Crawford County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,525. Its county seat is Denison. The county was named for William Harris Crawford, U.S. senator from Georgia and United States Secretary of the Treasury. History In January 1851, the Iowa Legislature authorized the creation of 50 additional counties in the state. Due to its lack of inhabitants, the designated Crawford County area was attached to Shelby County for purposes of revenue, taxation, and judicial matters. In 1855 there were sufficient settlers, who petitioned for separation from Shelby. This was granted, and a county governing structure was established. The county as then designated did not include its present western townships.
