Denis Pelli
Denis Pelli (born 1954) is a professor of psychology and neural science at New York University studying object recognition and reading. Pelli studied applied math at Harvard, and completed his PhD in physiology at Cambridge with Campbell and Robson in 1981. Since 1995, he is Professor of Psychology and Neural Science at New York University. Pelli is known for his contributions to the fields of visual sensitivity, letter identification, object recognition, the Psychtoolbox, equivalent input noise, QUEST, the Pelli-Zhang video attenuator, and the Pelli-Robson Contrast Sensitivity Chart, which allows for clinical measurement of contrast sensitivity. Visual Crowding
Visual crowding is the inability to view a target stimulus distinctly when presented in a clutter. Crowding impairs the ability to discriminate object features and contours among flankers, which in turn impairs people's ability to respond appropriately to the target stimulus. An operational definition of crowding explains what crowding is and how it is different from similar effects such as Visual masking, masking, lateral interaction and surround suppression; effects that make the target more challenging to see as well. There are different criteria that are used to differentiate crowding from these other effects. Firstly, crowding makes it difficult to identify an object but not detecting it among the clutter. Equivalent Input Noise
Equivalent input (also input-referred, referred-to-input (RTI), or input-related), is a method of referring to the signal or noise level at the output of a system as if it were due to an input to the same system. This input's value is called the Equivalent input. This is accomplished by removing all signal changes (e.g. amplifier gain, transducer sensitivity, etc.) to get the units to match the input. Examples Equivalent input noise A microphone converts acoustical energy to electrical energy. Microphones have some level of electrical noise at their output. This noise may have contributions from random diaphragm movement, thermal noise, or a dozen other sources, but those can all be thought of as an imaginary acoustic noise source injecting sound into the (now noiseless) microphone. Psychtoolbox For MATLAB
Psychophysics Toolbox Version 3 (PTB-3) is a collection of free functions for MATLAB or GNU Octave intended for use by neuroscience and vision researchers. It synthesizes and shows accurately controlled visual and auditory stimuli and interacts with the observer. It has an active forum, and many citations. PTB-3 is based on the Psychophysics Toolbox Version 2 (PTB-2) but its MATLAB extensions (in C) were rewritten to be more modular and use OpenGL.
