Democracy Watch, established in 1993, is a Canadian organization that advocates on democratic reform, government accountability and corporate responsibility issues. Background Duff Conacher co-founded Democracy Watch in September 1993. He served as coordinator until June 2011, and then again from April 2014 on. Conacher, who lives in Toronto, Ontario, is a graduate of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Democracy Watch provides information and support, and works in conjunction with, good government and corporate responsibility organizations from other countries. Public Inquiry into Anti-Alberta Energy Campaigns was a $3.5 million inquiry led by Steve Allan, commissioned on July 4, 2019, by newly elected Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and tasked with investigating foreign-funded efforts to undermine the oil and gas industry. Premier Kenney, whose United Conservative Party (UCP) had won a majority of seats in the 2019 Alberta general election, announced the creation of the Canadian Energy Centre (CEC), a Calgary-based $30 million 'war room' to "fight misinformation related to oil and gas", on the same day as the creation of the inquiry—to fulfill election campaign promises. Douglas Edward Schweitzer (born 1978 or 1979) is a Canadian lawyer and politician who was elected in the 2019 Alberta general election to represent the electoral district of Calgary-Elbow in the 30th Alberta Legislature. He is a member of the United Conservative Party. On April 30, 2019, he was appointed to be the Ministry of Justice and Solicitor General of Alberta in the Executive Council of Alberta, and held that role until August 25, 2020 when he was shuffled to the new ministry of Jobs, Economy and Innovation. WE Charity Controversy
The WE Charity scandal was a Canadian political scandal regarding the awarding of a federal contract to WE Charity to administer the $912 million Canada Student Summer Grant program (CSSG) in 2020. The controversy arose when it was revealed that the WE charity had previously paid close family of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to appear at its events, despite making claims to the contrary.
