Demetris Syllouris
Demetris Syllouris ( el, Δημήτρης Συλλούρης; tr, Dimitris Şilluris; born 27 July 1953) is a Greek-Cypriot politician. He is the former president of the Cypriot parliament and was the leader of the European Party between 2005 and 2016. Syllouris was born in Nicosia and studied Civil Engineering at the University of East London. Career Representative of Nicosia constituency under the banner of Democratic Rally Party (DISY)-Liberals Coalition 1991–2001, under the banner of DISY 2001–2004, independent 2004–2005, under the banner of the European Party 2005-2016 and since March 2016 under the banner of “Solidarity". On 2 June 2016 he was elected President of the House of Representatives for the Eleventh Term of Office of the House. In October 2020, having been implicated by the Al Jazeera investigation into the selling of Cypriot citizenship, he resigned from his role in government. The House of Representatives ( el, Βουλή των Αντιπροσώπων ; tr, Temsilciler Meclisi) is the national unicameral legislature of the Republic of Cyprus. Members and three observers representing Armenian, Latin, and Maronite Cypriots are elected by proportional representation every five years. 30% of seats are allocated to Turkish Cypriots, but these have been vacant since 1964. The House of Representatives of Cyprus is the only legislature in Europe within a fully presidential system. Elections A general election must be held on the second Sunday of the month immediately preceding the month in which the term of office of the outgoing House expires. The outgoing House continues in office until the newly elected House assumes office, but during this time the outgoing House does not have the power to make any laws or to take any decision on any matter, except in urgent and exceptional unforeseen circumstances. Cyprus Papers
The Cyprus Papers was a leak of government documents related to the Cyprus Investment Program (CIP) obtained by Al Jazeera and released in August 2020. The CIP allows non-citizens to apply and obtain a Cypriot passport by investing at least 2 million Euros in Cyprus. The passports obtained through the CIP are nicknamed "Golden Passports". Al Jazeera conducted an investigation based on the leaked papers and allegedly found that the Republic of Cyprus provided citizenship through the CIP to several people linked to crime and corruption. On the 12th of October 2020, Al Jazeera released a video of an under-cover investigation related to the Cyprus Papers. In the video, Al Jazeera reveals how Cypriot lawyers, business people and top-tier politicians are willing to aid and abet convicted criminals to obtain Cypriot citizenship, granting the criminals access to the European Union's internal markets and visa-free travel.
