Demba Jarju
The Gambia sent a delegation to compete at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7–18 September 2016. This was the nation's second appearance at the Paralympics, following their first participation in the 2012 London Paralympics. The Gambia sent one athlete, Demba Jarju, who failed to advance from his heat in the men's 100 meters T54 event. Background The Gambia had debuted in the 2012 Summer Paralympics competition, but have never won a Paralympic medal. The Gambia has participated in every Summer Olympic Games since the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Les Autres Sport Classification
Les Autres sport classification is system used in disability sport for people with locomotor disabilities not included in other classification systems for people with physical disabilities. The purpose of this system is to facilitate fair competition between people with different types of disabilities, and to give credibility to disability sports. It was designed and managed by International Sports Organization for the Disabled (ISOD) until the 2005 merger with IWAS, when management switched to that organization. Classification is handled on the national level by relevant sport organizations. Designed as a catchall classification system for people with locomotor disabilities, people with a variety of different disabilities are included in the classification system. The Netherlands competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 7 September to 18 September 2016. Kenny Van Weeghel
Kenny van Weeghel (born 16 September 1980 in Zwolle) is a Paralympic athlete from the Netherlands competing in the 100, 200 and 400 m T54 class wheelchair racing. He participated in the Paralympic games six times already and he has won 6 Paralympic medals among which two golden ones. Athletics career Weeghel won the 200m at the European Championships in 2001. This was his first main title and there were many to come. In 2002 he became World Champion by winning the 100m and a year later he won both the 100m and 200m during the World Championships. At the European Championships that same year (2003) he won the 200m and 400m. At the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, he won his first three Paralympic medals: bronze on the 100m, silver on the 200m and gold on the 400m. Liu Yang (wheelchair Racer)
Liu Yang (born 10 April 1990) is a Paralympian athlete from China competing mainly in T54 classification sprint events. Before achieving success as an athlete, Liu ventured into para-cycling, but switched shortly after his international cycling debut. Paracycling career Liu took up para-sport in 2006, and at first looked at para-cycling where he was classified as a handcyclist. He competed at the 2007 UCI Para-Cycling World Championships in Boudreaux, where he failed to qualify for the final of the road race, and finished 17th in the time trial. Athletics career Liu first represented China as a wheelchair racer at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand. Leo-Pekka Tähti (born 22 June 1983 in Pori, Finland) is a Finish Track and field, athlete and Paralympian competing mainly in category T54 sprint events. Career He won the gold medal in the 100m and 200m events at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. He also competed in the 2008 Summer Paralympics in Beijing, China, winning a gold medal in the men's 100 metres – T54 event and a bronze medal in the men's 200 metres – T54 event. Polio
Poliomyelitis, commonly shortened to polio, is an infectious disease caused by the poliovirus. Approximately 70% of cases are asymptomatic; mild symptoms which can occur include sore throat and fever; in a proportion of cases more severe symptoms develop such as headache, neck stiffness, and paresthesia. The Gambia made its Paralympic Games début at the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, United Kingdom, from August 29 to September 9. The Gambia National Paralympic Committee selected two athletes. Isatou Nyang (female) and Demba Jarju (male) both competed in track and field events, training for the 100, 200, and 800 metres races. Both are wheelchair athletes, and competed in wheelchairs donated by the Swiss Paralympic Committee.
