Rural Municipality Of Sifton
The Rural Municipality of Sifton is a rural municipality (RM) in the south-west portion of the Canadian province of Manitoba. History The RM was incorporated in 1883. The former town of Oak Lake, located within Sifton, annexed by the RM on January 1, 2015 as a requirement of ''The Municipal Amalgamations Act'', which required municipalities with a population less than 1,000 to amalgamate with neighbouring municipalities. The Government of Manitoba initiated these amalgamations in order for municipalities to meet the 1997 minimum population requirement of 1,000 to incorporate a municipality. Geography The most prominent geographical feature in the RM is Oak Lake. Other lakes include Plum Lakes and Maple Lake. Hartney is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Grassland within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015. It along the Souris River. Originally established in 1882, the community is named after James Harvey Hartney, an early postmaster in the district. The Hollywood film '' The Lookout'' featuring Jeff Daniels and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and the film ''The Stone Angel'' featuring Ellen Burstyn, were filmed in Hartney in 2006; taking advantage of such buildings as the community's grain elevator and museum. Hartney's local Member of Legislative Assembly is Doyle Piwniuk and the Member of Parliament for the area is Brandon—Souris MP Larry Maguire. Six kilometres west of Hartney are the Lauder Sand Hills. Oak Lake, Manitoba
Oak Lake is an unincorporated urban community in the Rural Municipality of Sifton within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015. It is located west of Brandon along the Trans-Canada Highway. The lake after which it was named is in the rural municipality's western area. During the late 19th century, the area around Oak Lake was a popular stopping point for fur traders and settlers due to the large number of big oak trees (revered for their strength) located around the lake that could be used to repair their wagons. In the fall of 1881, work crews on the transcontinental Canadian Pacific Railway had reached Flat Creek to the east of the current townsite. In the spring they moved the camp west and built a siding and station (now long gone) where the community's flags and flower garden are now located. Souris is an unincorporated urban community in the Municipality of Souris – Glenwood within the Canadian province of Manitoba that held town status prior to January 1, 2015 (2016 population: 1,876). It is located within the municipality at the confluence of Plum Creek and Souris River, from which it takes its name. Before 1882, the town was called Plum Creek. The community is home to Canada's longest historic cable-stayed footbridge (), known as the Swinging Bridge, which spans the Souris River that divides the community. Pipestone, Manitoba
Pipestone, Manitoba is a community in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Located at the corner of highways 2 and 83, Pipestone is approximately 35 km from either Virden or Melita, approximately to the United States border and approximately to the Saskatchewan border. It is mainly an agricultural area with some oil drilling nearby. Pipestone is part of the Rural Municipality of Pipestone. The office for the municipality is located in Reston, approximately 10 kilometers west on Highway 2. It was the birthplace of John Hamilton Roberts, who commanded the landing forces in the Dieppe Raid in 1942. There is an amateur video of a large destructive tornado that passed through farm fields near Pipestone on June 23, 2007, and another on July 23, 2008.
