Degel Zion Tel Aviv ( he, דגל ציון תל אביב) was an Israeli football club based in the Florentin neighborhood of Tel Aviv. The club spent one season in the top division prior to the Israeli Declaration of Independence. History The club was founded in 1933 in the Florentin neighborhood of Tel Aviv by Jews which immigrated to Mandatory Palestine from Greece and Turkey. In 1940, the club won the Samaria division of Liga Bet, the second-tier league of the Palestine League at the time, and was set to compete in promotion play-offs against the other regional winners, Hapoel Hadera and Hapoel Rishon LeZion. 1954–55 Liga Gimel
The 1954–55 Liga Gimel season was the last in which Liga Gimel was the third tier of Israeli football, as the new Liga Leumit became the top division, Liga Alef became the second tier, and Liga Bet became the third tier. Hapoel Tirat HaCarmel, Hapoel Even Yehuda, Beitar Mahane Yehuda, Maccabi Shmuel Tel Aviv, Hapoel HaMegabesh Rishon LeZion and Hapoel Mefalsim won their regional divisions and promoted to Liga Bet, the new third tier, whilst Hapoel Tel Hanan, Maccabi Binyamina, Hapoel Bnei Brak\Kiryat Ono, Shimshon Tel Aviv and Maccabi Ramla were also promoted. When the W-D-L record is not similar to the total number of matches played, the missing matches were declared 0-0 without points by the Israel Football Association. Liga Leumit ( he, ליגה לאומית, lit. ''National League'') is the second division of the Israeli Football League, and below its Premier League. Structure There are 16 clubs in the league. At the end of each season, the two lowest-placed teams are relegated to Liga Alef while the two highest-placed teams from Liga Alef are promoted in their place. The two highest-placed Liga Leumit teams are promoted to the Israeli Premier League while the bottom two teams from Israeli Premier League are relegated in their place. The system has a hierarchical format with promotion and relegation between leagues at different levels, and allows even the smallest club to dream of rising to the very top of the system. Football as an organised sport, first developed in the United Kingdom, who controlled Mandatory Palestine during the days of the British Mandate. The Israel Football Association joined the Asian Football Confederation in 1954, but was expelled in 1974 due to political pressure from Arab and Muslim members in the context of the Arab–Israeli conflict. In the late 1970s and 1980s, the Israel Football Association was not affiliated with any confederation. During this period, the Israeli national teams were only playing in FIFA competitions occasionally in OFC, UEFA and CONMEBOL qualifying tournaments. Liga Meuhedet ( he, ליגה מיוחדת, lit. ''Special League'') was a temporary second division of Israeli football in the 1949–50 season, the first after Israeli independence. It consisted of five regional division; North, Samaria, Sharon, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and South. There was no promotion or relegation. Hapoel ( he, הפועל, lit. ''the worker'') is an Israeli Jewish sports association established in 1926 by the Histadrut Labor Federation. History During the British Mandate of Palestine period Hapoel had a bitter rivalry with Maccabi and organized its own competitions, with the exception of football, the only sport in which all the organizations played each other. At the time, Hapoel took no part in the ''Eretz Israel Olympic Committee'', which was controlled by Maccabi, and instead sought for international ties with similar workers sports organizations of socialist parties.
