Decaturville Crater
The Decaturville crater, also referred to as the Decaturville Dome, is an impact crater near the town of Decaturville, Missouri, United States. It is one of the 38th parallel structures, a series of circular geophysical features stretching across the central United States which have been hypothesized to be the remnants of an ancient serial impact event. The Decaturville crater is in diameter and is estimated to be less than 300 million years old (dating to the Permian or younger). The crater is exposed at the surface. The effect that the impact had on the surrounding bedrock can be seen in a roadcut that runs along Highway 5 about 16 miles north of Lebanon. The crater was first described and mapped in detail by T. W. Offield and H. A. Pohn under NASA funding in the 1970s. An impact crater is a circular depression in the surface of a solid astronomical object formed by the hypervelocity impact of a smaller object. Decaturville is an unincorporated community in Warren Township, Camden County, Missouri, United States. It is located on Route 5 approximately seven miles south-southeast of Camdenton. The Camden- Laclede county line is less than one mile south of the community. 38th Parallel Structures
The 38th parallel structures, also known as the 38th parallel lineament, are a series of seven circular depressions or deformations stretching across southern Illinois and Missouri and into eastern Kansas, in the United States, at a latitude of roughly 38 degrees north. Estimated at 300 million years old, two are believed to be impact events from meteorites, but other structures are possibly remnants of volcanos. Missouri Route 5 is the longest state highway in Missouri and the only Missouri state highway to traverse the entire state. It is part of a three state, 650 mile highway 5.
