Dayton Marcos
The Dayton Marcos were a Negro league baseball team based from Dayton, Ohio that played during the early twentieth century. Founding and early years The Dayton Marcos history predates the formal organized leagues of Negro league baseball. As an independent team, and also as the only black team in the Ohio-Indiana League they played black and white teams all over the country throughout the 1910s. Early newspaper accounts mention the team as early as 1909, billing them as "one of the strongest Dayton semi-professional teams." The team was started by Daytonian Moses Moore, a real estate agent. Moore owned the New Marco Hotel and apparently named his team after that enterprise. The team was to be entertainment for Dahomey Park, the first black-owned and operated amusement park in the United States. They set up shop in West Side Park, later renamed Westwood Field and located 2 blocks west of Dahomey Park. Local newspapers sometimes referred to the team as "Moses Moore's Marcos." ... The 1920 Dayton Marcos season was the first season for the franchise in the Negro National League, also in its first season. Founding and offseason The Marcos predated the formation of the Negro National League in 1920, playing independent ball since 1909. When Rube Foster founded the league, the team was invited as a charter member. ''The Chicago Defender'' reported that owner John Matthews had scouts "covering near all the territory between Norfolk, Virginia, and Texas." 36-year-old Candy Jim Taylor, infielder on the 1918 and 1919 squads, was named manager, his first job in a career that would span more than 45 seasons and end with him as the winningest manager in Negro league history. Candy Jim Taylor
James Allen "Candy Jim" Taylor (February 1, 1884April 3, 1948) was an American third baseman and manager in Negro league baseball. In a career that spanned forty years, he played as an infielder in the early years of the 20th century for over a dozen black baseball teams; by the mid 1920s, he would play less regularly (doing so as a pinch hitter), with his final game came at 58. In 1920, the same year of the start of the golden era of Negro league baseball, he would take on the responsibilities of manager, where he would manage 1,967 games for twelve teams. Described as one of the great strategists of his era, Taylor is the all-time winningest manager in the Negro league era, having 955 wins along with two Negro World Series titles and one additional pennant in 27 seasons as manager. He has the most seasons managed by an African American manager along with having the seventh most for a manager in the history of baseball. Alex Radcliffe
Alex Radcliffe (July 26, 1905 – July 18, 1983) was a baseball player in the Negro leagues. He is widely acknowledged to have been the best third baseman in the history of the Negro American League. He was the brother of Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe. He is also sometimes referred to as Alex Radcliff. Early life Radcliffe was born in Mobile, Alabama. He started his baseball life as a batboy when he moved to Chicago in 1917; he served as the team batboy before eventually using his sandlot baseball skills for the Chicago Giants. Playing career He played seventeen seasons (five partial), beginning in 1926. He played one game that year and two games the following year before taking 1928 off. He played in one documented game in 1929 and then did not return until 1932. He then played the next eight seasons with the Chicago American Giants. Dizzy Dismukes
William "Dizzy" Dismukes (March 15, 1890 – June 30, 1961) was an American pitcher and manager in Negro league baseball and during the pre-Negro league years. Career Dismukes was a right-handed submariner, who is considered by many historians to be one of the best pitchers in the Negro leagues. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, he began his baseball career at age 17. Among his achievements as a pitcher, he defeated the then-major league champion Pittsburgh Pirates 2–1, in an exhibition game in 1911. While a player, he periodically wrote about baseball for such black newspapers as the ''Pittsburgh Courier'', beginning in the 1920s. Among the teams he played for were the Brooklyn (NY) Royal Giants, Indianapolis ABCs and the St. Louis Stars.
