Dawn M. Liberi
Dawn M. Liberi (born 1954) is a diplomat, international development expert and former United States Ambassador to Burundi. She was nominated by President Barack Obama on July 10, 2012 and confirmed by the Senate October 19, 2012. Early life and education Liberi was born in 1954. She earned a bachelor's degree from Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts. During her undergraduate studies she held internships at UNICEF in New York City and travelled to learn about the health care systems of Egypt and The Netherlands. She pursued graduate studies in California, earning a master's degree in Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley. She later focused on national security issues in graduate studies at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at the National Defense University. The part of Africa that is now Burundi and Rwanda was a feudal monarchy headed by a ''mwami'' (king) and a ''ganwa'', a feudal hierarchy of Tutsi nobles and gentry until 1890. In that year the Germans attacked the nation and attempted to subdue it with armed force. Eventually the Germans backed an attempted '' coup d’état'' against the king, Mwezi Gisabo. The ''coup'' was unsuccessful, but Gisabo was eventually forced to concede and agreed to German suzerainty. The Germans then helped him suppress the revolt. Ambassadors of the United States are persons nominated by the president to serve as the country's diplomatic representatives to foreign nations, international organizations, and as ambassadors-at-large. Pierre Nkurunziza
Pierre Nkurunziza (18 December 19648 June 2020) was a Burundian politician who served as the ninth president of Burundi for almost 15 years from August 2005 until his death in June 2020. A member of the Hutu ethnic group, Nkurunziza taught physical education before becoming involved in politics during the Burundian Civil War as part of the rebel National Council for the Defense of Democracy – Forces for the Defense of Democracy (''Conseil National Pour la Défense de la Démocratie – Forces pour la Défense de la Démocratie'', CNDD–FDD) of which he became leader in 2000. The CNDD–FDD became a political party at the end of the Civil War and Nkurunziza was elected president.
