David Nelson (footballer)
David Nelson (3 February 1918 – 27 September 1988) was a Scottish professional football player and manager, who played in the Football League for Brentford, Queens Park Rangers, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace as a wing half. Career St Bernard's A wing half, Nelson began his career with hometown junior club Douglas Water Thistle, before moving to Scottish League Second Division club St Bernard's in January 1936. He scored seven goals in 12 appearances during the second half of the 1935–36 season and left the club in May 1963. Arsenal Nelson moved to England to sign for First Division club Arsenal for a £200 fee in May 1936. He made just 9 appearances before the Second World War broke out in September 1939, but had experienced some joy in the reserve team, winning the London Combination in 1936–37, 1937–38 and 1938–29. Douglas Water (hamlet)
Douglas Water is a hamlet in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Named after the Douglas Water, the river which flows through the hamlet, local mining operations provided employment to local people, and the hamlet was bolstered by the ''Coltness Iron and Coal Company'' establishing an operation nearby. Three haulage companies that operated from the hamlet also provided a source of employment. There was for many years a junior football team that played in the hamlet, known as Douglas Water Thistle, but they became defunct some time ago. Several of their players have gone on to enjoy careers as professional footballers. There was also a train station servicing Douglas Water, but it stopped being a working station around the time of the Beeching cuts. The station platform still exists. When the last coal mine in the hamlet closed in 1967 the hamlet lost much of its population, as people left for other areas in search of employment. Highbury Stadium
Arsenal Stadium was a football stadium in Highbury, London, which was the home of Arsenal Football Club between 6 September 1913 and 7 May 2006. It was popularly known as "Highbury" due to its location and was given the affectionate nickname of the "Home of Football" by the club. It was originally built in 1913 on the site of a local college's recreation ground and was significantly redeveloped twice. The first reconstruction came in the 1930s from which the Art Deco East and West Stands date. 1945–46 FA Cup
The 1945–46 FA Cup was the 65th season of the world's oldest football cup competition, the Football Association Challenge Cup, generally known as the FA Cup, and the first to be held after the Second World War. Derby County were the winners, beating Charlton Athletic 4–1 after extra time in the final at Wembley, London. The tournament witnessed a disaster in the sixth round when, during the second leg of the Bolton–Stoke City tie, 33 people were crushed to death in the Burnden Park disaster. For the only time in the history of the competition, all matches from the First Round Proper up to and including the Sixth Round Proper were played over two legs, the first leg being played at the stadium of the team named first on the date specified for each round, which was always a Saturday. London Combination
The Football Combination was a football competition for the reserve teams of English Football League clubs from Southern England, the Midlands and Wales; other clubs from the Midlands and those from the North playing in the Central League (it is not to be confused with the Combination, a league for teams from North West England which existed at the turn of the 20th century). Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981.
