David Mackie
David Charles Mackie (January 1, 1836 – August 9, 1910) was a founder and builder of Scammon, Kansas. He was the first President of the Scammon State Bank. Early years Mackie was born near Kilbirnie, North Ayrshire, Scotland. His parents, David and Janet (Barclay) Mackie, lived and died in Ayrshire. Mackie's school days were limited, but he was especially capable in mathematics. At the age of 9, he became a trapper in a coal mine in Scotland. Career At the age of 25, Mackie was superintending engineer for the Barkip Coal & Ironstone Works in Scotland. He resigned from this position and in 1869 moved to the United States with his wife, proceeding to Hartland, Wisconsin, where his wife's uncle lived. The uncle was a farmer, and for a while Mackie engaged in farming, but that occupation didn't suit him. Scammon, Kansas
Scammon is a city in Cherokee County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 376. History Scammon was laid out in 1884. It was named for the four Scammon brothers, who operated the first mine there. David Mackie (1836–1910) was a founder and builder of Scammon, and the first President of the Scammon State Bank. The community was known as Stilson when it was first settled. The town was known as Scammonville for a short time before adopting the current name. The first post office at Scammonville, established in 1879, was renamed Scammon in 1890. Dalry () is a small town in the Garnock Valley in Ayrshire, Scotland. Drakemyre is a northern suburb. History Dalry (from gd, Dail Ruighe, 'the haugh at the slope') is a small settlement on the Rye Burn. Its history has signs of early inhabitants in the area; the remains of an ancient fort, made of three concentric round walls, can be found on the summit of Carwinning Hill to the North of Dalry, west of the B784 to Largs. In 1883 excavations by John Smith of caves in the Dalry Blair estate at Cleeves Cove found evidence of prehistoric man and otter bones.
