David Dalling
David John Dalling (1939 – 1 August 2020) was a South African politician, lawyer, and political commentator. He served in the apartheid-era House of Assembly from 1974 to 1994, representing the Sandton constituency. He later represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 1994 to 1999. In the House of Assembly, Dalling represented the United Party, the Progressive Federal Party, and the Democratic Party, and then spent his last two years as an independent after publicly declaring his support for the ANC in 1992. After his term as an ANC representative, he terminated his membership in the party, and he joined the Congress of the People in 2009. Congress Of The People (South African Political Party)
The Congress of the People (COPE) is a South African political party formed in 2008 by former members of the African National Congress (ANC). The party was founded by former ANC members Mosiuoa Lekota, Mbhazima Shilowa and Mluleki George to contest the 2009 general election. The party was announced following a national convention held in Sandton on 1 November 2008, and was founded at a congress held in Bloemfontein on 16 December 2008. The name echoes the 1955 Congress of the People at which the Freedom Charter was adopted by the ANC and other parties, a name strongly contested by the ANC in a legal move dismissed by the Pretoria High Court. Sandton, Johannesburg
Sandton is an upscale commercial and residential district north of the city of Johannesburg, South Africa. It forms part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The name of the city came from the combination of two of its suburbs, Sandown and Bryanston. In 1969, Sandton was promulgated as a municipality in its own right, but lost its status as an independent city after the re-organisation of South African local governments after Apartheid ended. History Early settlers Archaeological findings suggest the area, which Sandton comprises today, had originally been occupied by various indigenous groups, before European settlement, most notably the Tswana and, to a lesser extent, Sotho people. Jannie Momberg
Jan Hendrik "Jannie" Momberg (27 July 1938 – 7 January 2011) was a South African politician, businessman, and sports administrator who served in the South African Parliament from 1989 to 2001. A former member of the National Party (NP), Momberg's opposition to apartheid led him to become a founding member of the Democratic Party in 1989, and he joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1992. Born in Stellenbosch to a conservative Afrikaans family, Momberg inherited half of Middelvlei wine estate and subsequently purchased Neethlingshof Estate. Alongside his business career, he was a sports administrator in the Cape Province and later nationally as a member of the board of the South African Athletics Association. Paul Erasmus
Paul Erasmus was a South African Security Police officer who testified to the Goldstone Commission, and later the Truth and Reconciliation Commission about police dirty tricks and violence during the apartheid era. This testimony revealed the existence of a unit in the Security Police called STRATCOM (Strategic Communications) that specialised in misinformation and propaganda against opponents of the regime. Erasmus also testified on the police efforts to discredit Winnie Madikizela-Mandela by spreading false rumours about sexual affairs and drug use. Before joining STRATCOM, Erasmus had served in the counter-insurgency campaign in Namibia, as part of the Koevoet police unit. The Security Branch of the South African Police, established in 1947 as the Special Branch, was the security police apparatus of the apartheid state in South Africa. From the 1960s to the 1980s, it was one of the three main state entities responsible for intelligence gathering, the others being the Bureau of State Security, Bureau for State Security (later the National Intelligence Service (South Africa), National Intelligence Service) and the Military Intelligence division of the South African Defence Force. In 1987, at its peak, the Security Branch accounted for only thirteen percent of police personnel, but it wielded great influence as the "elite" service of the police. United States Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) is one of the eleven unified combatant commands in the United States Department of Defense. Negotiations To End Apartheid In South Africa
The apartheid system in South Africa was ended through a series of bilateral and multi-party negotiations between 1990 and 1993. The negotiations culminated in the passage of a new interim Constitution in 1993, a precursor to the Constitution of 1996; and in South Africa's first non-racial elections in 1994, won by the African National Congress (ANC) liberation movement.
