David Baker (composer)
David Nathaniel Baker Jr. (December 21, 1931 – March 26, 2016) was an American jazz composer, conductor, and musician from Indianapolis, as well as a professor of jazz studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Baker is best known as an educator and founder of the jazz studies program. From 1991 to 2012, he was conductor and musical and artistic director for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. He has more than 65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles to his credit. He received the James Smithson Medal from the Smithsonian Institution, an American Jazz Masters Award, a National Association of Jazz Educators Hall of Fame Award, a Sagamore of the Wabash award, and a Governor's Arts Award from the State of Indiana. Baker also held leadership positions in several arts and music associations. The Indiana Historical Society named Baker an Indiana Living Legend in 2001. The John F. He is the Henrietta and Aubrey Davis Endowed Professor in Biochemistry and an adjunct professor of Genome Sciences, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics at the University of Washington. He serves as the Director of the Rosetta Commons, a consortium of labs and researchers that develop biomolecular structure prediction and design software. David Paul Baker (born 5 January 1963 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England) is an English former professional footballer. Playing career A centre-forward, Baker was a member of the famous Wallsend Boys Club as a youngster, and was subsequently spotted playing for Bishop Auckland, turning professional with Southampton in June 1984 at a cost of £4,000 to the south coast side. He failed to break into the first-team at Southampton, moving on a free transfer to Carlisle United on 2 July 1985. On 31 July 1987, after 71 league appearances (11 goals) for Carlisle, Baker moved to Hartlepool United, again on a free transfer, where he played 197 games (scoring 67 goals) and was a vital part of the squad that achieved promotion in 1990–91, forming a partnership with Joe Allon. David Baker (born 30 December 1965) is an English former professional cyclist, who competed in cyclo-cross and mountain bike racing. Biography Baker, from Dronfield, Derbyshire, began riding cyclo-cross with Norton Wheelers. He moved to Ace Racing Team where he and teammate Tim Gould dominated cyclo-cross for years. In the late 1980s, Baker and Gould tried small mountain bike races, progressing to Mountain Bike Club events which were then a national series. The British Mountain Bike Federation began in the early 1990s; Baker won the national series on numerous occasions, along with national championships. In 1993, he won the UK round of the Grundig Mountain Bike World Cup at Newnham Park, near Plymouth. He came 15th for Britain at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Baker made his debut for Cambridgeshire in the 1970 Minor Counties Championship against Norfolk. Baker played Minor counties cricket for Cambridgeshire from 1970 to 1985, including 77 Minor Counties Championship matches and 3 MCCA Knockout Trophy matches. In 1972, he made his List A debut against Buckinghamshire in the Gillette Cup. He played two further List A matches for Cambridgeshire, against Northamptonshire in 1975 and Warwickshire in 1982. Dave Baker (July 30, 1937 – September 4, 2002) was a defensive back in the National Football League (NFL), playing for the San Francisco 49ers for three years. David Baker grew up in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, earning All-State honors in football, basketball and baseball. He enrolled at the University of Oklahoma in 1955 under legendary coach Bud Wilkinson. During his three years of eligibility (freshmen were not eligible in 1955), the Sooners went 30-2, were in the midst of their 47-game win streak (still an NCAA record), and won the Big 7 conference title all three years. Players played both ways at the time, Baker playing defensive back, quarterback and running back. In 1959, he was drafted into the NFL as the fifth pick of the 1st round by the San Francisco 49ers. His description of his career is that he first visited the US in 1962 and returned to work for NASA on the Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle programs between 1965 and 1984 as a Mission Planning and Analysis Department.
