Dave Tarrant
David Tarrant (1935/1936 – 2018) was a New Zealand Paralympian who competed in sport shooting. Tarrant lived in Christchurch. At the age of 31, a fall from a tree left him a paraplegic. He set up a shooting range across his living room with the target hooked into the stairs. At the Australian national paraplegic games in 1979 he won a gold medal and set a world record in the air pistol event with a score of 363 out of a possible 400. Shooting Para Sport
Paralympic shooting, also known as shooting Para sport, is an adaptation of shooting sports for competitors with disabilities. Shooting is a test of accuracy and control, in which competitors use pistols or rifles to fire a series of shots at a stationary target. Each shot is worth a maximum score of 10.9 points. Athletes use .22 caliber rifles, pistols and .177 caliber air guns (compressed air or pneumatic). Paralympic shooting first appeared in the Summer Paralympics at the 1976 Toronto Games. Competitions are open to all athletes with a physical disability. The 1980 Summer Paralympics ( nl, Paralympische Zomerspelen 1980), branded as the Olympics for the Disabled, were the sixth Summer Paralympic Games. They were held in Arnhem, Netherlands, from 21 to 30 June 1980. Background The Soviet Union, hosts of the 1980 Summer Olympics, were invited to host these Paralympics. However, disability sport was not there, and they passed; notoriously, a statement was issued denying the existence of any disabled people in the country. Soviet Paralympic teams were first represented in the 1988 Summer and Winter Games, also the last while the Soviet Union was extant. The first Paralympics on former Soviet territory would be in 2014.
